Specular highlight shouldn't be applied using auto symmetry. The light will reflect on the same direction on both eyes, unless there's 2 suns/lightsources which would bring a plethora of other lighting issues if existed

Eyes are so so so much fun to draw and a great thinking exercise.
My art style takes from a lot of different inspirations, primarily older Disney animations and kids story books. The same lighting applies to larger eyes, that jewel/glass effect takes a flatter work to something very endearing to look at.

That specular reflection is so important that removing it became shorthand for death in animation.

Go look at your favorite animated show: when a character dies, chances are that shine is dying with them.

I mean yes that's how eyes are shaded but I don't think it's the same thing that happens with a clear marble. The entire eye itself is like a marble, and that's why the highlight works the same, but it's mostly opaque white, not clear. And the clear part above the iris is not marble shaped. Instead, the lighting on the iris which is shaped more like an inward facing cone. This way, the light that comes from above shines on the bottom part of the iris, since that part is tilted upwards, and the top part is tilted downwards so it's in the shadows. And the pupil of course is just a deep hole so it's really dark

You can omit the white spot to create the opposite effect and make dead eyes.

When I draw, I always have to remember not to put a highlight on the pupils, because there's nothing for the light to reflect off of. It's literally just a hole.

Wouldn't the point of light come from the same direction on both eyes? One point is to the left and the other is to the right.

What do you do for super dark brown eyes, almost black, that don't get visibly lighter even when you shine a torch at them... how do you make them look not flat?
