SketchUp has a really great hole cutting function built-in for creating door and window openings, but occasionally it doesn't perform as expected. This video will talk about some of the common issues people have when trying to cut holes in flat walls in SketchUp!

well that explains a lot of my issues!!! I'll have to add these notes to my notes

when I write my notes I write them very detailed yet concise when I successfully perform commands.

I'm not sure why I'm getting a different result, but I'm trying to cut out openings in grouped walls; double clicked and no matter what I try it won't work. The face of the otherside of the wall remains. Frustrating.

Brilliant! Thank you so much- I´m very new to sketchup so I´ve been spending hours trying to work out why it didn´t work cutting holes in my walls today when it worked yesterday. Exploading it first was the thing that did the trick, but ungrouping the object did not however.
Do you have any idea why it did not work with ungrouping the object and selecting the wall face- is it because the walls are connected if you´ve made them from a pushed/pulled rectangle?
And, would you mind me asking what the explosion does to an object? Is it like loosing the connections between everything in the object?

Again- as I said in my comment last time- your videos are brilliant. I have learned soo much really fast from watching them.

UPDATE: If you're the kind that first puts imported windows on your walls then cut the holes behind them later; for the window that has failed to have a hole cut behind it, make sure the shape you cut around that window is slightly bigger than the window placed, then later adjust it with the move tool so it disappears behind that window. After, select that adjusted shape behind and extrude it as explained here👆. IT WILL DEFINITELY WORK!

Clear and well explained as always. One question is I use explode quite a bit but should I be regrouping after?

Do the walls have to be grouped to get this to work? My push pull WILL NOT push any windows or doors out no matter what I do. It extracts it into one large block or just insets it but does not blow it out. I've tried typing 6", 7", even 8" and it will not work. I even redrew the wall twice and used the line tool and the rectangle to see if that made a difference and it will not blow these out. I'm getting so frustrated with this!

Would have been great to explain the "Cut opening" function of components which dynamically cuts holes through surfaces without having to redo everything if placement needs to change.

For the third case, rather than exploding the group prior to the push-pull, delete the face (and edges) outside the group, then enter the group and use 'Paste in Place', then push-pull from inside the group.

Darn, I thought you were going to say how to use the cut opening when creating a component to cut through a double sided wall (seems to work on single plane walls)
