Randomizing Perc Loops with Ableton's Follow Actions

In my last video, I explained what Ableton's follow actions do and how the controls work. In this tutorial, I demonstrate one way you can use this for some fun, unexpected results. Ableton is capable of some great randomization techniques, and this is a good one if you enjoy working in session view.

i use the legato option instead of placing the start marker. After (in this case) 8th note the next time the clip is picked it (with "other")just goes further 8th note from the previous stop. Take for example 8 or 10 similar drum loops, record them for a few minutes, you will be amazed how many cool variations you can cut out of it. Basically it is an automated random pick from 8 or 10 different lanes like you can do in arrangement view.

I've been doing something similar for random fills. I put an empty clip on the first slot, set its follow action to "other", and the follow actions of all other clips to "first". You can then use the top clip's follow action probability to control how often a random fill will play.
