Absolutely meaning. The names and events are in general chronological order. The point is that the world keeps going on. And when we think we are special we are just part of the long progression of history.

Absolutely NOT random - the lyrics are a timeline of famous people and major world events in the 40 years from when Billy Joel was born in 1949 until the song was written in 1989 - it's a SERIOUSLY clever piece of songwriting !

As the story goes, Joel was talking to a young man who said that he was being raised in a world so much more complicated than what Joel was raised in, and Joel wrote the song to explain that the world has always been complicated, listing in chronological order the subjects of headlines from his birth to that conversation.

Nothing is random, all is orchestrated. "J.F.K. blown away, what else do I have to say."

It's chronological, from the year Billy was born (post WWII) until the year he wrote this (late 1980s) - - also, essentially the Cold War period. Lots of history teachers and professors have used this song to outline semesters of history courses. Yes, the message is serious. The music is what makes it compelling to listen to.

They are events that happened during his life that were significant. It's a history lesson in a song in a timeline, there are reactions that look at all the events he mentions.

Word is that Billy Joel was told by someone that nothing interesting had ever happened in the 50’s and 60’s, so he started writing down all of the interesting thinks he could think of and that was the genesis of the song. It slowly progresses decade by decade with historic or pop culture events for each era.

It’s a song about history. All of the things since Billy was born until the song was released. It’s a history lesson

Learn your history. Everything means something. Similar things start again for each generation. Because people do not pay attention to history we repeat it. Good or bad.

This is a musical timeline from the 50s to late 80s noting events and people that made a mark or a stain on history. Understanding the events and people in this song should be worth one college credit. Thank you both for this reaction video.

You’ll never hear a better musical history

She likes it because its a history lesson, he likes it because it has a good beat and is easy to dance to. Both viewpoints are perfectly acceptable.

It is about the world and how different ppl and circumstance affect our lives. The song is still relevant today. Dominica for the win!

Name all that, because they are historical events and characters that happened from his birth to the moment of writing this song.

"England's got a new queen" is a big clue to the chronological nature of the song. The way the phrase is worded sounds like it's just happened ( 1953 )

The words represent important events, key issues, the conflicts of life and the world at war.

Great reaction. It was the history of events that happened during Billy's lifetime.

This song should be a history class and taught to every kid nowadays . There is so much to absorb and it would make any teacher proud to teach it.
