How to Undercoat a Deck - 1 Year Update

After 1 year!

In this video, I'll be showing you a machine with a Mower Deck that we undercoated last year (2017).

I take you through the steps of removing, cleaning and undercoating a Mower Deck, using Rust Cure Formula 3000!

This is a very similar Lawn Mower (Toro LX465) that was shown in that previous video. I also did an undercoat on this machine last year, so I thought it'd be a perfect time to do a 1 year update video!

I exclusively use Corrosion Free Rust Cure Formula 3000, as I've found this product is far superior, when compared to other brands.

You can buy their products here:

It's also available at Canadian Tire:

In this video, I mention that there are many ways you can clean and protect a Mower Deck, however, after trying many different ways, and using many different products, I've found this way to be the most effective.

Doing it the way I show you will not only save you time, but also ensure your Mower Deck will not rust, as you're putting a protective layer of Rust Inhibitor in between the metal and the outside air.

A Rubberized spray is not recommended, as air/water can be trapped in between it and your deck (similar to how a truck bed rusts under a plastic bed liner).

Ideally you want to remove as much rust as possible, this is true. However, this takes more time, and results in my customers paying more for a service that isn't always needed.

If you get into the habit of cleaning & undercoating your Mower Deck each season, you'll never have to worry about it rotting away!

Proves that you don’t argue with someone who has put the time into doing this for years and knows what their doing. Nice of you to share with the rest of us!

I have been using the rust preventative on my JD rider mower for 4 years. The mower deck has over 700 hours. I already had surface rust that I treated only by painting after season. 4 years ago I started using rust converter on rusted areas, paint over with enamel paint, then, and finally paint on the rust preventer. Since that time there is no, none, new rust! It works. In 2018 I bought a Kubota compact and began using only paint over bare areas and rust preventer afterwards. After 4 years of doing this with a new mower deck I have zero rust.

I have a 2016 Cub Cadet XT1 46”. I actually think this machine is GREAT. I change oil ever 25 hours or less. I dropped my deck today and worked my ass off to get rid of caked on and hardened grass. I mean I really went at it with a demolition flat bar. Let’s say that took 1/2 hour. Then I spent another 1/2 hour with a wire wheel on a grinder to clean it all up down to bare metal. There was no paint left. A couple spots had kinda bad scaly rust. I worked it over real good. Did I get every last spec off? No. 98% or more though. I was happy about it. Vacuumed the thing clean. Sprayed on the Formula 3000 I bought because of this guy’s video. It went on THICK. Thicker than I expected. I then used an old shop rag and just slopped it all around covering every nook and cranny. I believe this guy who made the video and I expect in a year I’ll be glad I did this to my mower deck.

Bought a John Deere 42 inch a few months ago. I plan to stay on top of the maintenance for it myself. I like this video because this looks like the fastest easiest way to protect the deck without a lot work or materials. Pretty straight forward if you LISTEN to what is being said. Thanks for putting this out.

Thanks! My last mower deck rusted through, so I was looking for something to use as a preventative on a new mower. I had thought about bedliner, but this looks like this will work much better, just reapply every season.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I was looking for an alternative to painting or powder coating my surface rusted mower deck. This looks like the perfect hack for me!

Thanks for the update. I wasn't really throwing a B.S. flag, but I was a bit skeptical about how long a rust preventative treatment would last. Looks like the stuff you used did really well. The dealer that my neighbor bought his mower from sold him some rubberized undercoat spray, and insisted that undercoating the deck was the first thing that he needed to do, before he ever made a pass on his lawn. Well, he did as he was told, and waited 3 days before mowing. After a few weeks, I asked him how this magic undercoat was doing, so we decided to check. Lifted up the mower, and a fair amount of the undercoat was gone (probably half). Nice to see that the stuff that you used did its job, and also good to know that you are honest and showed that it needs to be touched up every year or so, rather than throw some silliness about how the deck is protected forever after being treated. Good stuff!

I think this is probably the best approximately I've seen on this topic. I'm still leery about pressure washing my deck though. I have a gravely and the dealer told me that once a year wouldn't be a problem but the big thing he said was to make sure it's completely cool. Not to do it while it's hot as the bearing are more likely to take on water.

My home-use Simplicity Broadmoor is 20 years old and I've probably washed the underside of the 44" mowing deck twice. I scrape the crud off the underside once a year for winter storage and now and again when the side discharge isn't blowing the grass clippings due to an overabundance of tarry crud. The underside has had surface rust as long as I can remember. This year, I finally have a 4" rust hole on the front edge that I patched with a rubber cover, license plate and self-tapping bolts. I'm happy not to have wasted tons of time and possibly done more damage than good by constantly washing the underside of the mowing deck, which has had gobs of wet grass sitting on it every spring. If I get a couple more years out of it, I'll retire from lawn mowing and hire somebody else to do it.

At 5 year mark I needed to replace my mower deck. Before I installed it I sprayed the deck with an automotive clear coat. That was two years ago. This past week we rebuilt the deck, new spindles, blades and pulleys. The deck is in great shape. Only a few rust spots.

I just undercoated mine with chassis saver. The last time I painted it was a few years back and all I used was some primer and farm implement paint.
The friction from the dirt stripped a lot of the paint within a season.
I am at over 100 hours of cure time so far and will probably be mowing this weekend. I hope this paint holds up to the abrasive dirt.

I do similar service for my customers or rebuilds. I wire brush off the rust, use rust converter first, then coat the bottom with truck bed liner, honestly nothing is tougher and it stands up to branch and rock chips just like it does in a truck bed. I'd suggest doing that than just more paint, someday I'll post a comparison of the 2 methods but the truck bed liner is really tough stuff. In addition I clean the top under/around the pulleys and coat that also with the truck bed liner as people usually leave grass/leaves in that area. I always tell my customers never power wash, just blow off the debris because power washing forces water into/around the bearings on the pulleys even though they are "sealed".

Thank You Man, you are cool and right! Keep the instruments and machines clean and covered! If you do not believe in the proper maintenance, keep buying new machines!
I am glad I can afford one and maintained it correctly!

Thank you great point. I use old motor oil with a paintbrush on my trailer hitch works great. You must repeat a few times.I did use the Rust-oleum rust protecive brush paint on my deck seems to be holding up many years now. Like you said you gotta clean & maintain your deck yearly.

I like the performance update. It's the kind of thing that can be very enlightening and be a motivation for others to follow through. However, one year is not very meaningful. Would like to see more updates.

Yes, I agree totally. I have owned many mowers over the years and using an oil based coating is the best solution. The use of fertilizer on the lawn is another reason for rust. My approach is two complete cleanings per season an include a product called "No Drip Oil" used for undercoating.
