In my 23 years in the Marines, he was the best Commandant. The Marines need another one like him to shake things up.

I entered the Marine Corps in 1989 and General Gray was the commandant. He instituted the concept of "every Marine a rifleman" and MCT at Camp Geiger was born. I was an 0311 and am still proud of the era in which I served, and my MOS. Semper Fi General Gray, and may you rest in peace knowing that the men you commanded over are "Always Faithful".

Gen Gray re-enlisted me in Okinawa in 1988 when he was making his first tour of the Marine Corps as the brand new commandant. He was well known for giving fellow marines a friendly punch in the shoulder. Well he re-enlisted me and when he was done with the ceremony he punched me in the shoulder so of course I punched him right back in the shoulder…you could’ve heard a pin drop in the room and then general Gray laughed out loud and everyone in the room started laughing. He is the greatest commandant the Marine Corps ever had I would have followed through the gates of hell! We loved that Marine. Rest in peace sir! God bless you!

Then Col Gray was the 4th Marines CO. As a LCpl I had a few conversations with him.

Had the honor to meet him in the early 80's, at Camp Lejuene. I remember him congratulating/smacking hard on the shoulder our squad leader. Knocked the hell out of him.

I remember General Grey he would be in Japan one day, California the next day, he would show up unannounced, which made him so effective and some Marines nervous, he was a Marines Marine

I love that his portrait features cammies with rolled up sleeves (none of the goofy camo out nonsense).

Gray always played the Officers against the Enlisted Marines, served with him in 2nd MarDiv and saw it all the time.
