Former British Prime Minister David Cameron said he felt ''desperately sorry'' for Theresa May following her tearful resignation on Friday.

May's announcement to step down on June 7 sees Brexit claiming its second British prime minister, less than three years after she took over from David Cameron following the country's vote to leave the European Union.

Cameron refused to be drawn on whether he saw former foreign minister Boris Johnson as the best candidate for prime minister, saying he would take a minimal stance on the party leadership contest.

You should feel sorry for anyone who’s had to come in after you and clean up your mess.

Cameron was right to call the referendum, wrong to encourage remain. A democrat and a servant of the EU.
