The Russo Brothers dominated the MCU with Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Civil War, and Avengers: Endgame, but since leaving Marvel, their films have struggled. Why are their post-MCU projects failing to resonate? In this video, I break down how the Marvel system made them look like creative masterminds and why their recent movies—Cherry, The Gray Man, and The Electric State—just don’t measure up. Are they Hollywood’s best middle managers or misunderstood visionaries? Let’s discuss!

They can run a really good McDonald's, doesn't mean they can build a gourmet restaurant from the ground up

For MCU directors, the Russos get the “Employees of the Month” awards. They’re the best at working within the established corporation. However, there’s no guarantee they will be as successful working within the current Marvel Studios management structure. That’s something I’m curious about.

Because in the MCU they’re not calling the shots. They’re directors for hire.

If you think about this in the context of their career before the MCU, it makes sense as well. The Russos were both very successful directing episodes of Community and Arrested Development. In a TV show, much of the creative vision comes from the showrunners and not the directors, so that show feels consistent when different directors helm different episodes. Just like their MCU films, they were given great scripts on these shows, which allowed them to direct great episodes of television, under the guidance of the showrunners. In a way they were McDonalds managers there as well.

They are basically a system QB in football. A strong supporting cast and system around them can make them look great but once they leave that team you see their true talent level. Truly the Jimmy Garropalo of filmmaking lol. I feel like sports and movingmaking have a lot of odd crossover you wouldn't expect.

Sean’s metaphor makes the most perfect sense to me in the context of Multiverse of Madness. I’m sure if Sam Raimi had been more hands on on that film it would’ve gone down exceedingly far better for me.

I saw someone the other day legit call them hacks.

They made the best MCU films, grey men was generic but fun but they have not been able to replicate the magic outside of the MCU.

The problem is they never broke out as directors wirh their own unique, creative style. They were working directors who were brought on as directors for hire and it was their work for a big company that gotnthem famous. Its not like they ever established themseves before that. I think thats a major problem today. Directors get plycked out of obscurity to do these huge franchise movies without ever having to have proved themselves by making a hit movie that has to stand on its own.

Do we tend to forget that the screenplay for IW and EG isn't by Russos? It was written by the writers who also wrote winter soldier for Russos. Sometimes a director can't be good without their writers.

I liked electric state for what it was!!! You’re exactly right about what people expect when it costs 300m dollars.

I read some people said that the Russos only succeed at making sequels. All their MCU movies are sequels. Cap movies were continuation of the foundation that Joe Johnston already worked on with the first film the same as what Whedon already did with the Avengers movies. They're not good at starting from scratch just like The Electric State

I believe they don’t write their movies so I feel like it’s not really their fault that their movies flop, they’ve just been dealt a bad hand.

Simply said, I don't think they are artists. And directors should be a lot of things, one of them: artists

They also keep working with past MCU actors, hoping for success, but it’s not working either. 😂

I think their movies outside the mcu are fine. I don't understand why they got so much backlash. Maybe people expected too much from them? They are not completely incompetent directors imo.

I think the writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have more credit than the Russo's. They have great movies in their resumee, outside the MCU.

Oh nah didn’t realize they made the electric state, one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen

The Russ brothers really suck at making non superhero movies

I think some directors are just good with directing certain movies. Martin Scorsese is great at gritty crime movies but maybe not as comedies. Comic book movies are their thing

I think the Mcu needs some new blood. A lot of the modern mcu films feel the same. Like, I think they should’ve used this multiverse saga to make more unique and creative movies because they could’ve taken place in a different universe. They could’ve hired your high profile directors and just allow them to do whatever they wanted it just make it an else world movie.
