The concept of heaven or the heavens in so many ideologies has often, if not always alluded to a place beyond the sky. In the society I was raised in, this so called “Heaven,” has for a long time bore a pearly white representation. Some may say it is because of the clouds that populate the sky, and in turn found themselves reflected in the white monochromatic wardrobe of its residents. My perception of the heavens, as a result of my experience, has grown to be quite contrary to this perspective. Though the sun is bright, I see the heavens as dark and pitch black. I therefore, see darkness and blackness as heavenly, as beautiful and as maternal. Though our light, our sun, is gorgeous and remarkable, it was born of space, its dark and beautiful mother. Space—the place beyond the sky, is dark. Though popular knowledge has come to acknowledge this attribute of space, we have yet to apply this understanding to heaven. We, in this religious nation, seem to have reserved darkness and blackness for hell, and find ourselves unable to detach from such an internationally profitable idea.
I named this song after the “Heaven” and beauty in our resilient interaction with struggle, after the color pitch black. Dark is the universe—dark the soil, from which all life sprouts.
