Rugby Referee Analysis: Nic Berry | Hurricanes vs Blues Super Rugby 2023

Nothing makes sense anymore. I don't know what I can add to even try to explain the incompetence shown in this game. The Hurricanes vs Blues was such a close game in the Super Rugby match. Yet, the ref and TMO had to play their parts in ruining an evenly matched game. The TMO in particular, was one of the worst I've ever seen. I would even go as far as to say that Marius Jonker is way ahead of Shane McDermott. I'm simply astonished as to how bad he was. That guy should be nowhere near a TMO booth, he has no idea what the heck he is doing. He put Nic Berry in so many bad spots, and never helped him.

But still, that is not an excuse Nic Berry, who was also bad. He saw the same angles, and simply never questioned the TMO. So I can't excuse him for that. Not to mention some of the bad explanations he gave regarding some of the incidents. As we saw with the British and Irish Lions series in South Africa. Nic Berry is not cut out for the job. He again, proved that. How many chances do these okes get?

You should have added the Blues player ramming his shoulder into the hurricanes players back while on the ground. Dont know how that wasn't minimum a yellow.

Australasian refs are probably the worst in the world. Hard to understand why. You'd think it would be the opposite.

Whilst Berry does make some poor calls from time to time the majority of the calls on this clip were by the TMO and assistant on the side lines

To be honest the TMO shouldn't awarded that Hurricanes player a try. Because the Hurricanes player clearly lost separating from his hand to the ball, and he was short of the line. Then he decides to push the ball to the try line which you can't do our else that's called a double movement.

Also the Hoskins Soututu try was the correct call. When Hoskins Soututu dive down before he grounded the ball down. As Hoskins was being tackled on the way down short from the try line from Hurricanes Player no.15. Hoskins managed without losing control of the ball, as Hoskins's Soututu had a nice grip of the ball, so he won't drop the ball on the way down. As Hoskins manage to escape out of a tackle, to be able to score a fantastic Blues Try!

I hope this guy is not going to ref in the world cup, there is no way that first try could be given. If that is a try then almost anything goes.

It should be noted that the onfield referee sees many of the same replays that the TMO does.
The onfield referee has the ultimate say and does not have to accept the TMO's point of view on the situation being reviewed.

The clean was from the side, and dangerous. He lifted the blue player's leg - what did he think was going to happen when he did that??!!

All this stuff and what we are seeing in the 6N worries me about the forthcoming World Cup. This guy is a liability.

what a mess. As you say the refs ruin games It's about time rugby came home and becomes a players game instead of a watchers game for those who never played the game.

How was that not a yellow card? World rugby are not serious about head contact. They want to lower the tackle height and all such nonsense but clear-tip they let slide. There is no excuse for lifting a player's legs higher than his head, non what so ever. Anybody that tries to justify picking a player's legs up while his head is dropping is plain insanity. World rugby should get their house in order.
