This song was played on the radio A LOT!

This song was a big hit in 1969 & of course, it received a lot of air play. In those days, a record usually wouldn't have a buying audience if it didn't get air play. Radio was where the listening public heard the songs, & we only got occasional glimpses of the artists during TV appearances.

I went to school with a girl named Mary Hill in the 70's. She took a beating with this song. She was a nice girl too. That aside, I love this song.

I remember hearing this on the radio quite a lot. Not sure all of us actually caught on to the lyrics. I had forgotten that it was Billy Joe Royal. Thanks for reminding me.

Oh, yes, it got played ALL the time. I was 16 or so, and never really thought too much about the lyrics. She was obviously a "bad girl, " and we all knew girls like that, but it didn't pertain to us, you know. Just a song. : )

I was too young at the time to know what the lyrics meant, but between his "Down in the Boondocks" and this song, I had a serious crush on him. What a voice! And what a beautiful man!

Yes, it was on the radio. Racy! I remember listening to it at probably 10 or 11 years old. I loved it and I loved Billy Joe Royal.

Nice pick, Craig. Yes, Harri, this was a hit. It reached #15 on the Billboard chart. In the ‘70s, Royal moved into the country market and was fairly successful. His earlier hit, “Down in the Boondocks, ” was a bigger hit and spawned a multitude of cover versions. Thanks, Craig and Harri.

I remember hearing this song as a kid. Billy Joe Royal was a country soul singer in the 60's. Joe South wrote a lot of his songs. His most successful song was "Down In The Boondocks" in 1965. Other songs were "I Knew You When", "Hush", "Yo-Yo" etc. Billy reinvented himself in the 1980's as a mainstream country star & had some hits such as "Burned Like A Rocket", "I'll Pin A Note On Your Pillow", "Tell It Like It Is" & "Till I Can't Take It Anymore".

Listened to this many times a day it would play on WHB 710 AM in Kansas City in the 60's as we listened intently on our 9-volt transistor radios lol. Great tune! Thanks Harri!

Bad Mary Hill, she teased them in the daytime and pleased them after dark.
I loved this as a teenager, but think my young mind didn't grasp the true meaning. It was played massively in Canada.
Such a great tune, especially the chorus with the horns, and great vocals.
Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Craig. A great flash back. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

This record peaked at #15 (USA) in 1969. His first hit was the charmingly infectious "Down in the Boondocks" (#9 in 1965). That one's worth a listen as well.

No controversy! Radio LOVED it back in 1969 with heavy airplay, and so did millions of us.

Great one, yeah, #15 in 1969, and was a bit bigger I believe in Chicago. Just a great track and I loved it then and still do.

Came out in 1969 and yes it got played on the radio, at least it did in Chicago. Although things in 69 were a lot different then just a few years later.
