VERY helpful! I printed a lot of personalized gifts this holiday season, and made all of them in horizontal mode. I noticed the problems you mentioned, but didn't take the time to troubleshoot or determine the cause of the issue. In most cases, the prints didn't fail, so I considered that a success. Now I'm wishing I would have printed more in vertical mode. Thanks for these videos!

The problems you mentioned with drawing text horizontally are actually not unique to 3D printing. In 2D computer graphics, fonts have to be displayed on a pixel grid, which mangles up serifs and thin segments something fierce. People got around this by just drawing bitmap fonts by hand, but this is time-consuming and the resulting fonts are not scalable. The fix was "font hinting": in every TrueType vector font there's code that will adjust the shape of each letter to fit the pixel grid *according to the font designer's intent*. This is why vector fonts were readable *at all* on 96dpi screens, why text on Windows and macOS looks so different (Microsoft fits *everything* to the pixel grid, Apple relies on anti-aliasing way more often), and so on.

Font hinting information would be absolutely fantastic for 3D printing as well. However, no CAD design or 3D modeling software uses hints - since they work entirely in vectors and rarely, if ever, touch voxels. All that data is thrown out at the moment the text is added to the model. CAM software (e.g. slicers & CNC router planners) could absolutely make use of shape hints (even outside of a typography context, i.e. "preserve this critical dimension"), but they only get STLs - far too late to actually use them.

I'd love to see the mechanics of how you printed the sign (slicer settings, purging etc). Looks awesome

Using a 0.25 nozzle I’ve had nothing but trouble getting small text to print well and I’ve tried all kinds of fonts. I get stringing, or the nozzle melts them too much even with ironing off. I have yet to be able to perfect it yet i can see some people do it well. I did notice some pla bands/types can handle it better like matte finishes. This is my only obstacle I’ve yet to overcome.

I've just tried your technique and it works ... however, I find it also works embedded text as well. Much better results printing up right. Thanks

If I may ask what font did you use for this project? I'm working on some gifts and would like to use it.

Nice video, something came to my mind, I want to write the text on the object with spaces. With which font and program can I do this? I wonder if there is a video.
