🇬🇧Deal or No Deal: Is this the end for Brexit? | The Stream

British Prime Minister Theresa May has just over a week to whip enough votes to push her Brexit agreement with the European Union through the British parliament. Parliament will vote on the deal on 11 December. However, she is faced with a number of roadblocks.

The prime ministers is facing tough opposition at home from both critics and supporters of Brexit. Those who want to remain part of the EU say May’s deal is just a watered down version of the UK’s existing membership arrangement. While those who favour leaving the EU say the deal doesn’t deliver a clean break. Other people believe the economic costs of the deal will be disastrous.

Cries to put the deal up for referendum are growing. People on Twitter, including politicians and celebrities, are using the hashtag #PeoplesVote to voice their opinion on the Brexit agreement. Labour MP David Lammy tweeted a referendum vote “would be the first time the public could choose between two tangible futures: the Brexit deal which you can read and remaining in the European Union which you have experienced”. May has balked at the idea of holding another vote saying the country has moved on from the leave vs remain argument.

This week, US President Donald Trump attacked the deal, claiming it could harm trade between the United Kingdom and the United States. "I think we have to take a look at, seriously, whether or not the UK is allowed to trade, because you know right now, if you look at the deal, they may not be able to trade with us," said Trump. May quickly denounced that idea, telling reporters, “As regards the United States, we’ve already been talking to them about the sort of agreement we could have with them in the future”.

On this episode of the Stream we ask our panel if May has enough political power to see the deal through? And if she fails what will happen to Brexit?

Leavers voted for unicorns, rainbows and candy-floss. It's not on. Awww, so sad.
The EU is in the position right now that the United States was/were in between 1776 and 1789: the Union of Europe is at the beginning of being born. It will happen -- with or without Little England.

To describe 17.1 million people being against EU membership as a Tory party spat, is denial in the extreme.  The implication of that is, that as long as MPs have no problem with each other, then public opposition can be ignored.  Nothing new there then to be honest.

The Brexit should have never happened, the referendum was based on emotions not on real thoughts and will cost a to UK in many ways. Delusional and sad. Was General Charles De Gaulle right? Genuine

Question: Would the remain camp be calling for a second vote if they'd won?

Why would any country enter the EU in the first place without a exit procedure in place, or, why doesn't the EU have such a procedure? This is crazy stuff, it's a world joke.

We have to leave the EU. If you think that staying in the EU will solve all these problems think again. In the southern provinces the tories will be seriously damaged as will labour in the northern provinces. This will cause a huge rise in populism, parties like UKIP and maybe even the tory's splitting and a new party emerging from that. You have to remember 52% voted out in the biggest turnout in living memory. It must be honoured.

Lady completely lost credibility in first quarter of this I'm afraid, it doesn't sound like she has a clue of how this all unfolded over 15 years. It was always there in the shadows of labour and conservatives, but the reasons Cameron was forced to have a referendum was sparked by the actions of john major in 1991, then Toni Blair with the other 2 treaties then the the rise of ukip, get some better journalists

For the Brexit vote, they didn't "have enough information", which, is universally claimed by all post election bellyachers. They took the vote to leave but the govt. had no intention of leaving, which, flies in the face of the Anglo-American empire that the Brits have assiduously worked toward for about the last 140 years. Now, the old people & the working class rues the day that they ever fell under the sovereignty of the mega state, E.U. "Britons never will be slaves", we pray to God.
