I tell people straight up when I meet them the first time. "I'm terrible with names. I remember your name right now, but a few hours from now or a few days from now I'll have to ask again. Eventually it will sink in and I'll remember your name. But I won't forget you or your face or your personality or any of those things."

Oddly enough, the weirder the name it, the easier it is to remember. If your name is John Davis or something, I'll forget it quickly. If your name is Johann Twinkle Schmitzenkopf I'll remember your name 50 years from now.
