Old Net/Sys Admin here.... I generally stay at least 2 generations behind in PC tech. (1) Most of the hardware issues/bugs have been fixed. (2) Prices on new (old tech) are very reasonable. (3) Pricing on compatible software is usually dirt-cheap. I'm a very patient person. I'll wait for a long time for a good deal! I never pay more than $200 US for a CPU. I never pay more than $500 US for a system upgrade. And since I started watching your channel, I have embraced the power of the "Yard Sale"!!!

One of the most popular configuration here in Brazil. LGA 1155, any CPU with 4 Cores (xeon 1230 v2 from Aliexpress are pretty popular), 8GB ram, and rx 580 2048p 8GB (who have the same performance as RX 570).

X79 with 2650 v2 or X99 with 2680 v4 configs are common too.

Built something similar to this after a friend was cleaning out their garage and wanted to get rid of their PC. I saw value in it, and they thought of me first as they knew I was into this stuff, so I took it, then put in a GTX 1050Ti and an i5-3470 and a cheap SSD and sold it to someone that wanted to get their son into PC's but didn't want to spend a mint.

I absolutely loved playing Megaman 3 when i was a kid in the 90's and Sparkman was my go to character for most missions. Hearing that synth music again made me feel like it was the 90's all over again. Thank you for the music Brian

I just built 3xi5-4590 PCs from old spare parts. I bought 3xIonz KZ 32V cases on Amazon for about £24 each. Little more than small cases to store spare storage, SSDs, CPUs and DDR3 memory. Fine for basic PCs. Available to spin up for odd projects and use offline cold backup storage.

I build all my PC from old parts I've even got P4s for people who want XP computers + I look for 64 bit boards with parallel printer ports because I get people that have old CNC machines that use Linux CNC that needs a 64 bit system with a parallel port. I've got a working i7 980x 6 core with 24 GB ram to find something to do with it just because it's old doesn't mean it's junck

My first gaming PC Built. what we call a Frankenstein PC; It was made out of a of a very good old office PC. Which I pay next to nothing for.
I think it was a Dell, and I do remember the CPU was an Intel 386 or 486 not sure. (Why half remember this is a friend at time saying, "You Luck Basket, " not the word he used and CPU was good CPU for the time). I then spent what felt like a small fortune on a GPU (nothing changed) and a sound card, which I plug in. I game on PC for a number of years. (remember playing UFO Enemy Unknown and think Fallout 1 and 2 well it 1/2 life time ago for me) Even today, as a smaller group of friends, we still play pass the part when someone upgrades, and from time to time, we have a clean-out of old PC parts to see if we can make a Frankenstein PC for someone who needs one.

Indiegaming is flourishing right now!
that thing that is holding this PC back is that graphics card but even so there are hundreds of very good games out there that it can handle. Steam is a treasure trove of older titles and indie titles that can provides thousands of hours of fun on a system like this.

I love this kind of videos, kudos to you Bryan for making this statement: You don't need the latest and greatest hardware in order to have fun playing games in 2024. Graphics are nice and all, but the gameplay is what makes a game a win or a fail. In fact, what I advise everyone to do is never ever throw away a working pc no matter how old it is. Let's say you have your grandma's old P4 lying around gathering dust. Just fill her up with some 16-bit emulators, get two cheap usb gamepads and give it away to some kid. Make the younger generations appreciate that wonderful pixel art of the 90s and save those old pcs from ending up in a landfill and becoming e-waste! ;)

Still have my 8800GT. That card was an absolute beast.

Gameplay is where it's at. I recently bought a mini pc (i5-7500t) for super-cheap, and set it up with retrobat. In addition to the usual emulation stuff, I added a bunch of indie PC games too. Despite having a much more modern PC, For a month now, I've been playing the mini PC way more.

That motherboard is a very popular bootleg 1155. Jumpers below the CPU socket allow for switching between NVME or SSD, since NVME wasn't a thing during the 1155 launch. I use Windows 10 and Linux Mint 21.1 on muh ghetto rig with that 1155.

Great to see another “scrapyard” build. Mine is still in the works. i7 2nd gen, single 4gb stick, boring old case and psu, gtx 730 aliexpress which I cant get to work right or an ati 1gb from 2008.

Thanks for the inspiration to get the project completed. All free parts.

with that scratched side panel, if you get one of those polishing kits you can attach to a powerdrill, you can buff out all those scratches

More of this is needed. I built a £200 for someone so they could play Forza Horizon 4 which it did pretty well. However they then decided it should play Apex Legends but the 4 core CPU simply could not handle it. So I upgraded him to a RYZEN 5 system but then his wife said it was too much money. He ended up with nothing.
People need to trim their expectations to their budget. They can upgrade later.
