I live in Siberia. It is much colder here in winter, down to - 40. But the Scots pine here is the most common tree. My son and I did a school project on growing them a few years ago. Cones had very few seeds (maybe autumn was the cause) and only one seed germinated out of the 20 we collected (no stratification, I guess) . And even that tiny seedling damped off... 😳 However, we managed to grow two larches and 4 Siberian pines. The Siberian pines had 100% germination. The probable reason is that its seeds are big nuts and we simply deshelled them, which aided germination.

Great video. Sowing our prepared seeds today. Many thanks.

I grew some from seed sown in the autumn and I got around 50 seedlings which I transplanted at Christmas they didn't seem to appreciate this as they all died bar one. To protect them from the weather I had them in a cold greenhouse but I it was a cold, damp atmosphere so I'm thinking that may have been a problem so I'm sowing some more today and try to bring them on in a more natural environment over the summer.

Do you have any video about how to germinate the seeds? :D

I've gotten hundreds of these to germinate in seed trays but they all seem to die after about a week. My first batch got too dry, and I think my next batch was too wet so the roots rotted. I can't seem to find the right substrate for them. I'm starting the seeds in coconut coir, which works great for every other seed that I plant, but I think it needs something sandier. Any advice?

@trees for life: what kind of substrate is used to germinate the seeds ? Seems ideal for pines.

Brilliant! Just what I needed.
Can I ask: what is your experience with Scots pine being eaten by deer when there are lots of other things available for them to eat? I understand that if it is a lone pine tree out on a peat hag, it will get eaten. The reason I ask is that I would like to plant scots pine, but my system by necessity involves expensive stakes and tubes. I reserve these for broad leaf, and have found that the deer won't touch the larch, therefore I don't need to give them the expensive deer protection.
Do you think the same might hold true for scots pine? I would rather plant them as they are native

They are by far the most wide spread species of temperate pine tree.

That pinecone is absolutely tiny I thought I found a scots pine but it was the size of a cantaloupe

Then what? I just germinated a Scots Pine from a seed. I don’t live in Scotland, but brought a cone home as a souvenir in 2017. I know, against the law blah blah blah. It remained dormant in a jar until about 3 weeks ago when I decided to plant it after I put all my veg seedlings in the garden and had leftover growing medium. How can I give it the best chance for survival? I live in zone 6. I also germinated heather...
