Once you start the last phase of the main quest you're locked into that area. And once the final quest is finished, the game is over. You can't go back and tidy up any side-quests etc. Haernhold is the new 'DLC' area with director's cut and you should aim do that immediately after, or during, the ice/nordic area. There's a key in there that opens chests in the final area containing the best weapons in the game. You can go back and forth from Haernhold and the final area until you complete the game however.

and now Forget all the tips and know that in the later half of the game Combat crumbles and you will steam roll pretty much every encounter the game throws at you. even with the director's cut, the game balance doesn't work. it's like character and combat mechanics have only been done halfway. probably because the game is a Myst clone and not a Bard's Tale, there was a brutal emphasis on riddles and tedious riddles at that....everywhere, all the time. combat and the rpg-mechanics are still just an afterthought.
the game still looks and sounds amazing, the art-team deserves a price. also the writing is pretty good, voice work in and out of combat is stellar as well. BUT! it is not a crpg and it is certainly not a Bard's Tale, it's Myst with some combat mini game stretches.

the game is so much fun with a trainer for inf gold and skill points. The progression is so slow and not rewarding.

The game would look even better if the characters from your own party would be animated as well.
This way it looks a bit stiff.
