Getting dressed in 1903! Or maybe closer to 1908... somewhere around there. This historical get ready with me covers all the basic underpinnings from the chemise and drawers to the corset, bum pad, petticoats to the skirt and shirtwaist. The Edwardian era has an incredibly distinctive silhouette created by the structural garments and many layers of fabric and often padding. I hope you enjoy this turn of the century outfit!

Feel free to ignore my entirely not historically accurate hair and lack of headwear… I have not yet found a suitable hat to decorate. Also yes, I maybe should have changed the date of GRWM to a few years later to make it a little more plausible. Let me know what other historical movements you’ve found were actually not what you were originally taught in the comments below!

Have you heard of Sojourner Truth? She actually called out white suffragettes for racism in the early 20th century in her “Ain’t I a Woman” speech.

I think it's extremely important to call out the bigotry in the sufragette movement, but I don't think it's fair to discount the entire movement. Race politics may have been an important part of the womans vote protests in the US, but the sufragette movement was active in many countries where that wasn't as much of an issue. Their goal really was to fight for womens rights, and while it is sad and problematic that they did not include all women in that, it was (and still is) an important thing to fight for. We shouldn't hero worship woman protestors who were actively being racist, that's definitley true. But we also shouldn't discount a movement that fought for and achieved extremely important progress for so many. It's more complicated than that.
That being said, I really like the combination of GRWM and some context for the time. I just feel like some nuance was missing here.

I just found your channel and I'm in You do such a good job combining history, ethics, and fashion and sewing, and you have such fresh takes. You really made me want to learn more about the connection and differences between different suffrage movements. I'm a teacher and I find that a lot of our curriculum in schools very much DOES glorify the women's suffrage movement without examining the people that it sacrificed to achieve its goals. I would love to know any specific sources you used for the video? I came here from the video you made with Snappydragon so I'll check there too!

Love the combination of educational content and GRWM! Do you have any reading recommendations on the racism of the suffragette movement?

What an absolutely wonderful video to watch while doing my ankle exercises... the perfect distraction! Historical aesthetics with a side of let's-be-realism. I couldn't ask for anything more (well, I mean, I actually could have listened to another 10 mins about further nuance re: the racism of the suffragette movement, but I wouldn't be so bold as to actually demand that <3 )

Interestingly focused on USA only despite using 'Edwardian' as the era title. Maybe persons not from England should develop their own Era titles and free themselves from the Windsors dominance as most of you are from republics not colonies like myself.
