Amazing race by Elliot & Yared! An honour to host them at the New Balance Kö Meile in Düsseldorf, Germany!

Back When Sydney Maree ran his 3:47.52 at the 5th Avenue Mile in New York City in 1981, the course itself was a significant downhill course. In future years, they made it more level from start to finish, but the 1981 course was on a sloping downhill run.

By the way it was today up to 32°C and 89, 6°F in Düsseldorf, so not even optimal conditions.

Well done to Elliot Giles, wasn't expecting that from him! S/O Mary Moraa who also broke the 600m WR this wkend!

This is interesting because watching Giles’s YouTube channel, he says that in between failing to qualify for the Olympics and getting the call up, he was just doing long distance training, and I guess after getting the call up he had to as much sprint work as he could, so all that distance training must have paid off for this event by laying a solid foundation, and the sprint work for the 800 in the Olympics gave him the top end speed.

That's amazing - I wasn't expecting to see that this morning over here in the UK. Well done Elliot!

Jim Ryun ran a 3.51 on a creepy cinder track with a old pair of leather spikes over 50 years ago. Yet you wanna say that this is the greatest mile performance. We dont even know if the cut corners...

I’m waiting on a video on Sifans incredible effort in medaling in 3 Olympic distances, and 1 of them being gold beating the world record holder in the marathon.

Giles needed this to salvage his season.

I remember racing against Sydnee M. in a 10k a few years after he retired from competitive racing. We hit mile 2 in like 10min and he says to the rest of the lead pack.. ok guys lets go... i'm like yeah... I am going! and toasted everyone by like 2 mintues. What a talent.

Giles has had such bad luck - with chronic calf problems not allowing him to do any distance and for years having to usen elliptical trainer instead. Had he been healthy who knows what is career could have looked like. But respect for his 2024 year - almost on the verge of giving up - trained hard for Paris - collision on the track at the Brits qualifier! And then late call up to Paris. Travelled all round Europe washing his clothes/kit in coin operated washing machines or his shower in the hotel - looking after a family. Respect!

0:54 Interesting to see John Walker of New Zealand (#2 and standing on our right) lining up for the road mile. He was the first person to run 100 sub-4 miles, and the first person to break 3:50 for the distance. BTW, there is a one mile race held down Queen Street, Auckland, New Zealand that is run even more quickly since it is mainly and steeply downhill. Mike Boit ran it in 3 min 28.3 sec back in 1983.

Elliot Giles is a strange athlete. I remember when he ran his 1:43.63 indoor 800m, which is second all time, it just seemed to come out of nowhere, then he immediately went back to not winning anything. He has plenty of reasonably fast times throughout his career, but occasionally performs much better than his season would suggest is likely. Either way, congratulations to Elliot and Yared.

I know this is far from a road mile race but you’ve gotta do a video over Charlie Lawrences’s 100k WR attempt in Lithuania.

That’s a huge upset. Blake is not even in the same league as the goose. It must be a post Olympics holiday fun run for the goose.
