Albany is the capital of the U.S. state of New York and the seat and largest city of Albany County. Albany is located on the west bank of the Hudson River approximately 10 miles (16 km) south of its confluence with the Mohawk River and approximately 135 miles (220 km) north of New York City.

Albany is known for its rich history, commerce, culture, architecture, and institutions of higher education. Albany constitutes the economic and cultural core of the Capital District of New York State, which comprises the Albany–Schenectady–Troy, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area, including the nearby cities and suburbs of Troy, Schenectady, and Saratoga Springs. With a 2013 Census-estimated population of 1.1 million the Capital District is the third-most populous metropolitan region in the state. As of the 2010 census, the population of Albany was 97,856.

The area that later became Albany was settled by Dutch colonists who, in 1614, built Fort Nassau for fur trading and, in 1624, built Fort Orange. In 1664, the English took over the Dutch settlements, renaming the city as Albany, in honor of the then Duke of Albany, the future James II of England and James VII of Scotland. The city was officially chartered in 1686 under English rule. It became the capital of New York in 1797 following formation of the United States. Albany is one of the oldest surviving settlements of the original British thirteen colonies, and is the longest continuously chartered city in the United States.

Thanks for this vid. Borne and raised there, spent the first 24 years of my life there (S. Hawk ST), joined the Army in 1991 and haven't been back since. Brings back lots of memories. Thanks again.

Very cool tour.Albany is such a unique city.. small yet big quiet yet busy.... pound for pound has the most beautiful architecture and city scape than anywhere I’ve ever lived. It is just waiting to re- activate! High taxes a huge impediment... lots of poverty that appears to be isolated in many areas... feels almost by government policy-design. Has so so so much potential...if you want beautiful architecture, cool restaurants, bars, small town feel, great access to airport-train station, easy access to outdoor life and enough music theater culture to satisfy.... give it a chance. Of. Purse when Rona is over

Moved to Albany in 79, lived on Grand st, south end for 7 years. Was a warzone then, not much has changed. Moved out of the city in 94, the area in 2013. Go back to see family and a stop at Sovrano pizza, best pie in the city.

I lived in and around First time in the mid-1990's. Second time about 5 years later. In theory, I think The Capital District is a great place to live. I don't know about now, but it was relatively affordable, I found the people to be relatively friendly, it's full of history, and you're between 2 to 4 hours from NYC, Boston, Montreal, Burlington. The principle reason that I left was that the job market in upstate NY in general, is not particularly robust.

Unless you're self employed, (and you're used to earning $50, 000 to $100, 000/year), for the most part, you need to be a public school teacher, a cop/fire fighter, something in nanotechnology, physician, nurse, engineer, perhaps a CPA.

When I was there, there was not a Fortune 500 company headquartered within a 100 mile radius of Albany.
