3D Hydro- simulation of streaming instability and Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in protoplanetary disks. The coordinate frame is a co-rotating shearing box.

Kelvin-Helmholtz instability regulates the vertical scale of the particle layer. Streaming instability leads to local density enhancement, which during the non-linear saturation get aligned to azimuthally elongated filaments.

For this simulation, I used metallicity Z = 0.02, Stokes number St = 0.2, pressure gradient beta = 0.2, and a resolution of 128x128x128 grid cells. Self-gravity is turned off, but vertical stellar gravity is turned on.
