Hiring An Established Law Firm Doesn't Always Mean You Have An Established Attorney Representing You

When you sign a retainer agreement make sure you are receiving legal services from the attorney of your choice. Sometimes you are given the young associate that does not have the experience to fight the battle. Sometimes the guy whose name is on the shingle does not handle criminal cases. It’s important to know exactly who will stand by your side in court.

Sure you can file a bar complaint but that does little for the defendant that is facing prison. You can write a negative review but that does not help if the attorney fumbles the ball. Lawyers cannot guarantee victory. They should focus their practice in the area of law they are representing you in. Hire an experienced criminal lawyer not someone that dabbles in it.

In the last week, I have heard about two situations wherein the defendant or the family hired a law firm with several lawyers only to find out the attorney assigned had little to no experience. In one of the cases, the partners of the firm had no experience in criminal defense yet they accepted the case and allowed an associate to take on a life felony case. Absolutely astonishing.

In both situations the family paid over 15k. One paid 15k and another paid 25k. What are they getting for their money? How much will they be required to pay? How will their attorney perform in the courtroom?

Nobody hires a heart surgeon to to do ankle surgery. Do I want the nurse practitioner to perform my kidney transplant? Obviously not. Do your research before hiring a lawyer. It’s not just reviews or a billboard. Do research and ask about the type of law that the firm focuses on.

Reading their website should give some insight. Read the Florida bar website. Read their blogs, articles, reviews and ask questions.

Be careful who you hire.
