Being the best at what you do is just not enough anymore. Today’s business world demands a diverse skill set that that sets you apart from your competition. It’s unlikely that you’ll get this diversity of opportunity by concentrating in only one discipline or industry. Don’t pigeon hole your career or your opportunities. Moving over may indeed help you move up!
Lateral is NOT a dirty word. If its upward mobility you want, you should consider making one or more lateral moves during your early career. While this may sound counter intuitive, by understanding various disciplines like finance, sales, operations and even HR, you will obtain the skill sets needed to get your resume noticed.
This enhanced exposure and experience will let your prospective employer know that you are up for the task, not afraid of change, able to succeed in any environment, and business savvy. It will make you more valuable and successful as you navigate your career and climb that corporate ladder.
