Honda Civic Si Burning A LOT Of Oil-K20 Engine

In this video, I talk to you about my Honda Civic Si burning a lot of oil! I have a 2009 Civic si with a K20 engine, and it has been burning a lot of oil lately. I know that it is absolutely normal for an engine to burn a bit of oil, especially if you drive it hard; however, there was only a drop of oil on the dip stick when I checked! I want to try to get to the bottom of the problem, but for now, I plan on continually topping up the oil as necessary.

I know this is old. My 07 Si was going through a quart every month if not more. I found out it was my vtech solenoid. Specifically the O ring for the top sensor that was leaking. It’s been about a month so far and not a drop is missing. One day I’ll need to rebuild the motor but not just yet

I have a 1991 Honda civic si with about 190, 000 miles. I was putting 20-50 oil plus a thick oil additive & it burned a quart every 500 miles. I took the spark plugs out & poured Seafoam into each cylinder & let it soak overnight. The next day I removed the remaining liquid & bumped the starter to move the pistons. I did this process for four days, two days using Seafoam & the last two days using Marvel Mystery Oil. After process I removed any remaining liquid from cylinders, installed the spark plugs, & changed the oil using only 0-30 oil. Now my car uses the thinner 0-30 oil with no additives & it burns no oil! This process of soaking the top of the pistons /rings & bumping the engine to move the pistons must have dissolved & removed carbon from the piston rings with caused them to seal better. This saved me from rebuilding my engine, I didn't think that it would help but it fixed the oil burning problem entirely & it now has 214, 000 miles on it. FYI: don't ever crank your engine over with liquid in the cylinder, you'll hydroloc your engine, bend your connecting rods & destroy your engine. I got this idea from a moron on YouTube. He removed the spark plugs poured Seafoam into each cylinder, put the spark plugs back in & cranked the engine over about an hour later. He is lucky he didn't destroy his engine from having liquid in the sealed cylinders when he cranked over his engine.

Three things you need to do.
1 change your pcv valve least every 2nd oil change. There under$10.
2 have some one check your piston rings.
3 change your oil often. I prefer quarterly every 3 months. $20-30 every 3 months is going to take your car a long way.
I have a 08 Ford edge and a 2007 accord. They both have over 250k miles and run like new.

Check the honda vtec solenoid, it is located behind the engine, it leaks from vtec solenoid

Change pcv. Shake it see if there's a sound. You use good quality Mobil 1 Extended the gold bottle and mobil filter. Its pretty much the best. Pennzoil/shell is not at all

Honda say check your oil every time you fuel up . K20s use about 500ml per 1000 miles on a steady thrash 10w40w grade on a older k20 will slow the oil use down

My 2007 K24 is doing the same thing. Drives good no smoke, PCV is new. I was told rings stick. I'm going to try a piston soak over the weekend and see if I can hopefully loosen the rings.

Look for leaks first. I have 2008 si and if you go into vtec a lot it will burn oil. Believe it or not a quart every 1000 miles is within industry standards. Here are some things to help. 1. If you've never changed PCV valve change it. 2. In Europe they use 5w-40 syn. in these engines. If one brand doesn't help switch. I had no luck with Mobil 1 euro formula. 3. Check oil often. Running low on oil will definitely ruin a timing chain and possibly an engine. 4. Realize that a lot of high performance engines use oil because of the high revs. Also the more miles you put on it the more oil it will burn due to wear. So changing oil every 3000 miles will help extend life of engine.

k20 burning oil ? these things are bullet proof well i know this video is 3 years old but i will still say that if you start your car and you see exhaust puffing blue smoke your valve seals are bad but if it gives off blue smoke on acceleration you will have to disassemble the upper and lower part of the engine to change the piston rings another way you can check is start the car and open the oil filler cap if you feel alot of air pressure on your hand its not normal that means you have low compression and your piston rings are bad and maybe your piston rings aren't bad at all or valve seals sometimes the valve known as pcv valve could go bad or your vtec solenoid could also cause oil burning problems

The last time I had a Honda, it was an 89 Civic. I had to literally check the oil every day. It averaged about a quart or two a month with not much driving. Clouds of smoke when accelerating lol. Otherwise, she ran fine for a car with 300K miles on it. I joked with people that the car came with a secret smokescreen to get away from the cops because it was so dang slow.

I have a 2012 si, do about 360 miles per week and I do about 1.5 quarts between oil changes @5000 miles. I changed the PCV value and that seemed to help a little bit but I do think it might be the piston it up at 83.5k miles and now I'm around 132k

oil rings.. replace them and you are good to go, i've had the same problem 2 months ago.

Got a 2010 si and if I use regular wal mart synthetic it burns alot, if I use eneos it barely burns at all.

I have the same engine I was told the piston valves need to be replaced mine burns oil too, typical with high rev engines

Hondas burning oil is normal. They all do it. Its due to the valve guides not being the correct tollerance tightness. Even when these cars are new they burn oil. The engines themselves are basically rock solid and rarely ever break once you keep the oil topped up. I have a 99 accord that burns a lot of oil but the engine is not making strange noises even after 230k miles. Keep your oil topped up and this car could last you over a quarter of a million miles. Hondas are great cars but they have a catch with the engines. They love to drink oil. Also replace the pcv valve. It gets clogged often and causes oil burning. Hope this helps and enjoy your honda

SI's burn oil. Si's require premium gas. Keep an eye on it and keep a qt in ur car. Ask any SI owner, they burn oil. Thats probably a little much, check your PCV valve. Scotty Kilmer has a really good youtube video on PCV valves.

Mine does the same thing. It doesn't make sense but, it's fairly normal. If you are redlining a lot and sitting in high RPM's just keep an eye on it. I add probably 2 quarts in between my 4, 000 mile changes or, about 6, 500 kilometers. Higher quality oil can help but, not much.
