After the 1988 publication of the novel "The Satanic Verses," which Muslim fundamentalists were convinced insulted Islam, the Ayatollah Khomeini issued an order than author Salman Rushdie be executed. He lived for nine years under threat of being killed. In this interview originally broadcast on "CBS Sunday Morning" on September 29, 2002, Rushdie talked with correspondent Martha Teichner about the battle over freedom of thought in Islam and the "enriching jumble" of his past that has inspired his books; his 1999 move to New York City; and the problem of becoming "famous for the wrong thing."

The attack on Rushdie only proves his criticism was justified.

How can people harm each other in any way, let alone like this. Hoping he makes a full recovery and his assailant punished, accordingly.

The people in power there in Sweden must NOT fail in finalising Rushdie's name for the Nobel Prize for Literature - 2022. This year's failure shall make a huge damage to the fight for the free speech in our beloved world today due to the Nobel Committee after the lethal attack on Salman.

It is important that Muslims who disagree with violence speak out against this ruthless attack on Salman Rushdie.

Khomeini never even read the book. He simply believed the words and opinions of his devoted Islamic subjects. Rushdie was extremely smart to write a controversial novel. Controversial and critical literature allow us to think more and look at the world differently.

Some people think their religion is the best and perfect with peace and submission. The quran mortified its own prophet and said it's a book from their god.

He never had issues on the streets of NYC, but winds up in rural western New York finding grief.

Perplexed and sad to see the tremendous support for the heinous attack on a writer on BBC Urdu. To the ignorant and extremist element, he is a hero. Is this the teaching of the so called "religion of peace?" What an oxymoron. This is a fitting example of how blind faith is not fit for today's modern societies.

God gave us free will. This includes freedom of thought, expression, art humour, journalism, literature and sharing those ideas with others. Without that, we are no longer human
