Not the most stunning trick, perhaps But it's interesting that you can do it in other bases too. If the spectator calls out 457 in base 16 you can appear to multiply it by 11 and then F1 to get 457457, since 11 x F1 (which amount to 17 and 241 in base ten respectively) = 1001 in base 16 . Alternatively, sticking with base ten, we can try to amaze our friends by multiplying, say, an eight digit number like 45737191 by 17 and then by 5882353 to get 457371914573191.

I deduced that 1001 was divisible by 7 when observing that 999, 999 is divisible by 7, since the repeating decimal of 1/7 has a period of 6. I knew that 999 was not divisible by 7 because I knew that 111 was 3 times 37.
