Since 1969, the Neve 33609 stereo bus compressor has been a studio mainstay. Its smooth character coupled with its ability to be transparent or extremely colorful have made it a workhorse limiter not only for music production, but also mastering, post, and broadcast applications.

A legend turned plug-in

The Precision Comp Limiter is based on one of the legendary British compressors found in top-level studios worldwide. Originally produced in the ‘70's as an evolution of the previous 2254 model, it quickly became a much sought after unit for many audio applications, including music recording/mixing, mastering, post-production and broadcasting. Its sonic character is not as aggressive as that of many other popular units of the same era. Even when the unit is pushed to extreme settings, the compression is fairly gentle and retains a musical quality that doesn't "choke" or squash program material. Nevertheless, the compression effect is clearly distinguishable.

get it right and win.

I actually slightly prefer the IK Multimedia 33609 sound to the UAD 33609... am I crazy? They’ve impressed on more than a few shootouts. I am going to look into IK products more seriously.

thanks for a great video .. ..i so often see people not doing null tests when comparing and i always do that myself for the same reason you do to try and get it as close as possible and to hear what is going on in a simple clear way... i tried the IK against the T-Racks version.. and they where very different.. (well VERY is always a strange term when talking things that really are very small things for most people).. but seemed like the T-racks had more punch and focus and the LiquidMix was more wobbely and all over the place ..

Almost every plugin shootout I'v ever seen, the differences between most of them was just splitting hairs.
If someone couldnt get good results from either, its not the plugin's fault.

Great vid, I saw ken Lewis use the uad version on lead vocals and it sounded pretty nice. Ever tried the ik version in vocals?

Is there a limiter effect in the track of UAD Neve 33609?
The limiter works only for the IK, and it sounds like there is a difference in the volume.
I am concerned about possibility in fair comparison.

Boy tha IK comp really pushes the highs. But i guess it.s ok if you need sheen on a dark mix. It is a little harsh tho in this situation ...

IK sounded better. You'll be honest, you favor the UAD because it sounds better, or because you forked out big bucks for their hardware and NO WAY will you find people admitting that they may have gotten screwed. UAD users HATE to admit that there are native plugs that sound just as good and many even better WITHOUT needing to buy expensive hardware and also having to go through all the memory limitations with it. Many times you find people who were able to sell off their box and get some of their money back and then you finally get the truth from them. They freely admit they forked out a ton of money for hardware that still runs digital plugs just like native digital plugs and they admit that using native is just much easier and trouble free and there are a ton of them that sound great and just as good and better than UAD plugs. T-racks 5 absolutely rocks and has some of the best plugs out there. Black 76, ONE, 670 Fairchild, API eq's, my god they all sound heavenly. It's the best overall package out there. The plugs are simply astounding. The Mic locker, the leslie sim, the MU compressor, the 1073, it's just amazing hat you get and the astonishing quality of them all. Then you get the Music match, all the SSL plugs, every one of them the best emulations I have heard to date, and you can get all these for around 100 dollars during a sale. Easily the best package of plugs out there.

People seem to forget that this UAD plugin came out over 10 years ago. Plug-in processing was not nearly as good as it is now. That said UAD definitely still needs to update this one. They’re improvements on older plugins are always very nice

What's the point? If you need to use a compressor, just use your stock comp or any, works just fine, just know what you're using it for, if needed. Neve just some over priced equipment meant for studio's with deep pockets, nothing magical. Plug ins are simple computer code with graphics on top, your most paying for the name brand licensing agreement.
