Alex Lifeson's unexpected second act after Rush

After Rush ended, Alex Lifeson wasn’t sure if he’d ever make music again. The Canadian guitarist had toured the world with his best friends from high school and changed rock music, so he felt like he had been there and done that. But when Alex heard a young singer named Maiah Wynne, he was transfixed by her voice and lyrics. That led him to form his new band, Envy of None. Alex sat down with Tom Power to talk about how that group came together, the early days of Rush, and how at 17 he decided he was destined for a life of rock and roll.

Q with Tom Power is a daily conversation with the artists, writers, actors and musicians who define this cultural moment in time. The chat is informal, wide-ranging, playful, and allows the artist to explore their art and the contexts that have shaped them through their career.

Everyone needs a best friend like Alex.
Every band needs a musician like Alex.

RIP Neil. 😭

I had the unique opportunity to play a round of golf with Alex a few years back. He is, as you can tell, an absolute class act. As a fan of RUSH for over 40 years, it was a thrill. Nicest man you'd every meet.

Rush makes me smile and fills me with joy. For 3 decades, the critics slagged them and they kept going. When the 2, 000’s arrived, the press finally realized their value and contribution. Out of all the bands left, they were the last band with the same guys still standing. Makes me so happy!

Tom Powers conversational skills really brought out even more of Alex’s soul. A beautiful interview. And it is good to hear how well he is doing.

Been a fan since 1977. Saw them a good 30x. For Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, Signals, at least 9 times. Was fortunate to meet Alex and Geddy and chat with them. Alex is truly a sweet human being. Has a huge heart. ❤

This is wonderful. I could listen to Alex all day. He is just so humble and honest. Inspiring to know he still plays guitar so much and is still writing. Also, great job Tom on your interviewing skills.

There is no one like Alex. Incredibly unique, soulful guitar player as well as a kind and hilarious human. One of by biggest inspirations. My dream: to do a comedy show with him then jam. Come on, universe!!

Been a fan for about 20 years now. Being peruvian i had low chances of seeing them live, but thankfully i got to see them in Montreal back in 2015, and its one of my most cherished memories. Best band ever, thank you Alex, Geddy and Neil ❤

A true musician. Writes guitar to fit the music. It’s not a guitar show. It’s a band. He knows how to stylistically fit what he’s doing in the music.
One of the best technical players ever. One of the best songwriters ever.
One of the best musicians ever
