STORYLINE:
Reconnaissance drones are flown several times a day from Ukrainian positions deep within forest that stretches across the border with neighboring Belarus, scouring sky and land for signs of enemy movement.

Ukrainian units gather intelligence across the 1,000 kilometres (650 miles) long frontier of marshes and woodlands in anticipation of a possible surprise offensive from the north, a repeat of the unsuccessful Russian invasion which targeted Kyiv at the start of the war nearly one year ago.

The Ukrainians are taking no chances.

Since the summer, they have been reinforcing defenses, building and expanding trenches and laying mines in the forest to repel Russian invaders ahead of a springtime offensive predicted by Ukrainian military officials.

Military experts and Western intelligence have played down the possibility of a renewed offensive push from the north.
