New Westminster is British Columbia's oldest incorporated city, established in 1859, and it was also the first capital of the province.

New Westminster was founded in 1859 by Colonel Richard C. Moody, and was originally called Queensborough, but was later renamed by Queen Victoria, becoming the first capital of the colony of British Columbia.

It was incorporated as a city in 1860.

New Westminster served as the capital of colonial British Columbia from 1859 to 1866, when Victoria became the capital after the unification of the colonies of British Columbia and Vancouver Island.

As a result of being named by Queen Victoria, New Westminster is known as "The Royal City".

During the Cariboo Gold Rush, New Westminster was a major outfitting point for prospectors traveling to the goldfields.

The city is located on the north bank of the Fraser River, 20 km east of Vancouver. The Pattullo Bridge connects it to its neighbour, Surrey.
