From my grandfather, who was a golf course superintendent, "If you want to find the easy way to do something, watch a lazy guy." The problem with that is that lazy guys tend to also have low standards that country club members are never be satisfied with. The other observation from someone who grew up working on the golf course and has cut literally thousands of acres of grass, is that you get the best cut (golf course quality) by moving the mower slowly while moving the blade or spinning the reel, fast. ( on the golf course most mowers are reel and bed knife rather than rotary). Kids tend to run the garden tractor wide open to get done with that lawn cutting chore as fast as possible. The trouble is that the mower isn't over the grass long enough to allow the airfoil on the ends of the blade to lift the grass to make a really clean, even cut and it looks like hell.
