Here’s Why SF Boycotted Orange Juice for Gay Rights | KQED #Shorts

Back in 1977, Florida’s Dade County passed a law that prohibited job and housing discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. Singer, activist and local resident Anita Bryant, an opponent of gay rights, launched a successful campaign to repeal the ordinance. (It was later reinstated in 1998.)
But her actions sparked nationwide protests from the LGBTQIA+ community, including a boycott of orange juice, which she promoted in TV commercials as spokesperson for the Florida Citrus Commission. San Francisco’s Tavern Guild printed signs for local bars to display that declared, “To promote human rights, this establishment does not serve Florida orange juice or orange juice from concentrate.” Aspiring politician Harvey Milk helped lead a march through city streets, with 5,000 people protesting the passage of the law. Local residents like Allen Klein –– interviewed in this video by former KQED reporter Randy Shilts –– helped organize fundraisers to benefit organizations that fought against Bryant’s efforts.
Her crusade did take a toll on her career, however, as companies withdrew their support due to her political activities –– and Bryant filed for bankruptcy in 1997.
