Peace in Ukraine would save lives, which is why the Hungarian government is calling for a ceasefire and the immediate start of peace negotiations, said the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade on the Croatian news television program N1.
Péter Szijjártó said in the interview that the most important task of the international community at the moment would be to save lives.
The minister justified the Hungarian position, which differs from the rest of the European Union, by saying that there is a significant Hungarian community of 150,000 people living in Ukraine, whose members are being heavily recruited into the Ukrainian army. Germans, not Danes, but Hungarians will die in this war, he said.
He said that Hungary demands an immediate ceasefire and peace negotiations, because peace is the only way to save lives.
He expressed his hope that the members of the European and transatlantic community will take the Hungarian position, because according to him, the rhetoric of war is now much louder and stronger than the rhetoric of peace in this hemisphere.
According to Péter Szijjártó, since Hungary is not a party to the conflict, it is not the job of the Hungarian government to say what happens after the ceasefire. At the same time, territorial integrity and sovereignty must be respected - he noted, adding: it is also clear who attacked whom, Hungary condemns Russia for the war.
To the suggestion that the end of the war depends on Russian President Vladimir Putin, Péter Szijjártó responded that there are clearly two sides in the war and that he hopes both will negotiate because both want to achieve a sustainable peace.
The minister also spoke about the fact that if a war escalates, the escalation will not take place thousands of kilometers away, but with the neighboring regions. However, Hungary does not want to participate in the war, he said.
To the question of what would have become of Ukraine today if the West had not sent weapons, Péter Szijjártó answered that he considers the question of what would have happened if no war had started, because this war should have been avoided, to be much more important.
Regarding whether Viktor Orbán will visit Kiev, the head of Hungarian diplomacy said: they have received an invitation, and now the technical details regarding the preparation of the visit must be clarified. As soon as they see that all prerequisites are met, the visit can take place.
The minister described the ongoing negotiations between Hungary and the European Union on EU resources as a frustrating situation.
According to Péter Szijjártó, the freezing of funds is not a problem from the point of view of the Hungarian budget, which he explained by last year's economic growth of almost five percent and the large number of investments.
He said: in the case of EU funds, it is a question of principle, because these are not humanitarian donations, but rather the performance of Europeans, including Hungarians. The fact that a part of European money is not given to Hungary, but is refused for political reasons, is unacceptable, he said.
The minister saw the cause of the conflict in the fact that Brussels does not like the way the Hungarian government governs the country, that it opposes federalism and stands for national powers.
"We are a right-wing, patriotic, Christian government that goes completely against the mainstream, and Brussels cannot digest that," he said.
They want us to fail. This is what they wanted during the last elections as well - he emphasized, indicating that in his opinion the freedom of the press and the judiciary are guaranteed in Hungary.
He drew attention to the fact that it was recently revealed that they supported the united opposition with tens of millions of dollars of foreign money, but despite this, Fidesz-KDNP defeated them - 55 percent against 35 percent.
He confirmed that the Hungarian government supports the NATO accession of Finland and Sweden, and that the Parliament will also ratify it. The proposal in this regard has already been submitted to the parliament, and the prime minister has also asked the government factions to support this proposal.
In response to the question of whether Hungary's large support for the Republika Srpska in Bosnia has a stabilizing effect on the region, the foreign minister emphasized: Hungary has a very good, strategic, friendly relationship with Serbia and considers the stability of the Western Balkans essential, which is why it supports for example, the acceleration of the EU enlargement process.
He added that economic stability is also an important aspect of stability, which is why tenders were announced for small and medium-sized enterprises in the Republic of Serbia.
