First thing's first.... The movement took off immediately... Immediately! As soon as I unscrewed the crown and twisted it to wind it up. You can see that in the video.. It is very obvious that this little watch was ready to go after a long trip. You can also see when I put it on the time grapher that it is running great... This is for the Vostok naysayers! You know who you are.

Second... The titanium oxocarbonitride plating lends a very cool look and feel to this watch. To some, one thing that might be a bit off-putting about the less expensive Vostoks is the cheapo looking chrome plating. Not with this watch. It does not flash like chrome... It is not difficult to look at. It is attractive and textured just enough as to still feel relatively smooth... Think bead-blasted. The lines of the case and lugs are classic and shapely. The grey color of the watch sets off the painted red details better than the shiny chrome versions. The finish is actually better than more expensive Vostok's that I own. No sharp corners or edges.

The only real complaint is what's expected... The strap is terrible. It's is claimed to be genuine leather but I wouldn't want to even imagine the poor, anorexic bovine that this hide was stripped from. The strap feels more like thick crepe paper than leather.... but that's ok. I knew this when I ordered the watch. Fortunately, the cost of this watch leaves lots of monetary wiggle room needed for a nice replacement strap.... which was immediately ordered.

While not as rugged or water resistant as it's younger cousin, The Amphibia, The Komandirskie still has a lot of cool factor.... at not really a lot of money for a proven and cult inducing mechanical timepiece.

There is just some very endearing about these watches that I just can't put my finger on.

The leather strap of the Komandirskie is actually not a bad material to refinish and make into something nicer (if it's a decent fit in length for you in the first place): I recut mine to 15mm (because I needed that for a different watch), pulled out all the stitching (careful, don't rip the holes), brushed it along its length (brass brush), oiled it ( Balistol and coconut oil IIRC), and then re-did the stitching tidily (original holes wherever tidy enough) and in dark blue; needed proper size buckle then also (respective watch's original); oh and sewed the keeper tighter and more tidily also.

Came out really nice, and I find it actually pretty comfy to wear, too. The material by itself, the little padded areas, the pin holes, really aren't half bad.
(But of course it's a labor of love: worked for ~3 hrs, and saved like $10, or $15 max, on not buying another strap)

At the time of watching this video, I’m wearing a Vostok Amphibia 120512 on an army green nato strap and waiting on a Komandirskie 811021 along with other 7 Vostoks. 😅
