Hero MotoCorp is one of India's largest motorcycle manufacturers. Catering to a wide audience, the brand's offerings include commuters, scooters and utility models, as well as, more recently, premium models such as the Mavrick 440. Hero MotoCorp also has a number of electric initiatives such as Vida V1 and Surge, a startup dedicated to developing exciting electric concepts.
At the recently concluded Hero World 2024, the Surge 32 was unveiled, and it's certainly the first of its kind to come from an established, mainstream manufacturer. Hero describes the S32 as a modular electric vehicle that can be used as both an electric scooter for personal mobility and a three-wheeler rickshaw for transporting cargo or passengers. Essentially, the S32 consists of two main components: a self-contained electric scooter and a rickshaw without a front wheel. So technically, those who buy the S32 are purchasing a two-in-one vehicle.
Surge claims that it takes just three minutes to convert the scooter into a rickshaw. All you have to do is place the scooter at the front of the rickshaw where the front wheel of the scooter will take over the steering duties for the rickshaw. The rear wheel of the scooter will not be used in rickshaw form and will rest on the rickshaw platform. Both the scooter and the rickshaw have their own independent motors and batteries, and the scooter joins the rickshaw through an electronic connector that allows the rider to use the scooter's handlebars and controls to control the rickshaw.
In terms of performance specifications, the S32 scooter has up to 6 kW or about 8 horsepower, while the rickshaw has 10 kW or about 13.5 horsepower to account for heavier loads. As for batteries, the Surge will use existing technology from Hero's EV subsidiary Vida. Moreover, Surge plans to launch different variations of the rickshaw to suit individuals' needs and preferences. Closed-type designs to transport people are also said to be under development, as well as open-type rickshaws similar to the pickup-like design shown above.
In fact, a concept like this is completely new and Hero MotoCorp had to work with the Indian Ministry of Road Transport to create a new vehicle registration category called "L2-5". According to Indian automotive publication AutoCar India, the new vehicle registration category is defined as "2-Wheeler-3-Wheel Combi Module" of a three-wheeler motor vehicle built to be combined with a two-wheeler vehicle of the L2 category. with a non-self-propelled rear module unit. It can be separated or combined as needed.”
It's worth noting that, as of now, the Surge S32 is just a concept and there's no specific launch date on the horizon yet. However, the fact that Hero has gone so far as to create a new vehicle category just for the S32 is a clear indication that it has serious plans to turn this concept into reality.
