I'm just getting into Shostokovich and this is a great work. Rostropovich and Shostakovich are so in tune with one another. He's a superb pianist with a beautiful, rich tone and Slava's playing pulls at the soul - he makes the cello sound like.the human voice. The emotional spectrum he brings out of his cello is stunning and transcendental. The first movement is especially beautiful.

Trying to learn the cello part. This recording was made before I had ever heard of Rostropovich. Fortunately, during my time at Cornell University, it was economically feasible to have great music on campus by professionals. A chamber music series in the Alice Statler Auditorium had MR one evening. I didn't play an instrument in those days, but the music was great. I also recall the young Guarneri Quartet, Quartetto Italiano. In the main hall we had the Philadelphia under Ormandy, the Cleveland under Szell, the Pittsburgh under Jos. Scripps or maybe he had the Buffalo then, the NYC Opera doing Don G. I confess, I am glad I have lived long enough to appreciate this music, this D minor Sonata.

Shostakovich on the piano? I guess it's technically impossible to surpass this recording then.

Rostropovich is great cellist, but for the piece of work of Shostakovich, Daniil Shafran is real grand master.

DDS wrote the later Cello concerto for Rostropovich, but didn't tell him until the day he handed over the score.

Was Rostropovich using gut strings for this performance?

This recording brings me out in goosebumps. Listening to history being made. Discussion of "authentic" is pointless. Is this the "definitive" performance? Shostakovich certainly plays a few bum notes. But also it assumes that if Shostakovich and Rostropovich had gone in the studio again a year or two later then the second performance could not have been the definitive authentic performance - or that the first had somehow become superseded. Clearly listening to the great man playing his own music is utterly enrapturing but I'm prepared to bet that had he listened to (let's imagine) Richter and Natalia Gutman there would not have been moments where he nodded and muttered "I like that..." (in Russian of course)!
