'Shady Grove' Melody with 80s Riffs!

This guitar lesson is on the absolutely killer tune "Shady Grove" and one I think you're really going to enjoy. I originally heard this tune many years ago on the "Shady Grove" album by Jerry Garcia and David Grisman. It's one of those tunes that no matter what group you play with, someone is bound to know it.

Alright fellow guitar pickers, here is how I have structured this lesson for you. I have mapped out four key breaks for you to learn. Two of them focus on the basic melody, one in the open position and the other up at the tenth fret. The other two breaks bring in some fun eighties riffs that I have woven into the tune. The first is “Axl F” from Beverly Hills Cop and the second is “Take On Me” by A Ha. These riffs might feel a little tricky to finger on the guitar at first, but take your time, work through them slowly, and you will have them down before you know it.

Have fun with this lesson and at the very least try learn the melody. The 80s riffs are just a bonus for you. I like comic relief in music and you might find other musicians out there do too! Give it a shot on your next gig or jam session and see what those around you think when you pull out one of 80s riffs we all know and love. It's certainly unexpected and I think you'll get a smile from those around you.
