Album Certifications - Going Platinum

I can't speak for everyone, but I can't never quite interpret the meaning of album certifications. Gold, Platinum, whenever I hear those terms, the best I could do is just guess what they mean. In this video, I explain how the tiers work, how the albums are counted, and propose some changes to the system.

I don't agree with you with getting rid of gold record awards.. Gold is necessary for the non-mainstream side of music.. most music genres can't ever hit 1+ million units in sales. just think of all the other major genres such as country, metal, punk, club, folk, industrial, etc, and sub-genres such as indie, hardcore, goth, death/black metal, shoegazer, etc.

So gold is still relevant in these non-mainstream/non-pop genres as Gold is usually the only level that most of the artists of these genres and sub-genres could ever hope to achieve as their listener base is very small in comparison to the mainstream/pop genres.

Didn't mean for this to come off as such an opinion piece. I just intended to show off the tiers, how albums are counted, talk about the company that runs it, things like that. Just threw in some thoughts on how to make the system more known to the public as well.

Platinum is more rare and expensive than gold, diamond is more rare and expensive than platinum, it's quite simple :p

10 x (times) platinum doesn’t sound good.

Thriller is triple diamond.

Platinum, double platinum and triple platinum sounds good.

What they have right now I think is fair enough. Sounds good. No one wants to call their album ten times platinum.
You’re overthinking.

If you don't understand gold, plat, diamond - you clearly didn't follow late 90's rap.
they bragged about it excessively in the songs lol

You should do a video on Costco. last year They changed their starting wage from 11.50 to 13. I work for Costco only part time right now making 14 dollars an hour (raises every 1080 hours) and have full benefits and a retirement plan and I'm 20. You should Make a vid about how they were able to do these kinds of things. Everyone that's there has these benefits and Retirement. It's kinda crazy. Would love to see the back story of the company and how they came to be today. Thanks company man. You the GOAT.

I'm not usually one of these guys, but I wanted to say that when I see a video from you in my subscription box I feel elated. Your videos are extremely well done, interesting, and enjoyable. I feel, much like many others, that you deserve more attention than you currently get. I look forward to more videos.

10x Platinum sounds wack.

I think its fine how it is. Nothing non-intuitive about it

Your line of thought on this is a solution without a problem. The RIAA invented this stuff to make it easier to give out physical awards for top-level figures in the industry. It's a largely internally-focused system that the "public" by and large has no need to care about.

I would suggest you have, “Diamond, ” for two reasons:

1.) Would you say, “Billion, ” or should that be switched to, “One Thousand Million?”

2.) As you point out towards the end of the video, they use, “Platinum, ” because it is an easy to understand qualifier that lets everyone know that album is serious business.

I think, “Diamond, ” was created for a very similar reason. As your research may have made you aware, fewer than 100 albums (to date) have ever achieved Diamond status. Consider all of the albums that have ever been released, “Diamond, ” certification is a venerable, “Who’s Who, ” of the most successfully selling albums in history.

If you just say 13x, 10x, 26x, Platinum or what have you, that’s going to be more noise and less signal. Much like Platinum signals something, so does Diamond, namely that you’re talking about one of the best selling albums in history.

"Never hear people talking about Gold or Diamond"... Dude, I played for an artist that had a record go gold... it was a big deal... a big deal when it hit that number. Anymore in the music industry, if you're not a huge pop icon, it's harder than it was before to even get a gold record. It's a huge milestone to have a record go gold for any artist. Believe me, it's harder than you think to hit that 500, 000 mark, especially in 2017.

Can you do a video on store brand products versus name brand products? I've always been curious about that. Great work btw.

And I always thought the RIAA was just there to threaten to sue me into bankruptcy if I download anything with a song in it.
