I think there are 2 perspectives for this song:

1. The girl broke up with the guy, he was in love with her and was heartbroken, he developed depression and imagined she was there with him. Her being a ghost can mean the feelings he thought she felt for him. Due to seeing her "ghost", he drinks his sorrows away.

2. The girl actually did die, causing the man to go a bit coo-coo and start seeing her ghost. He starts drinking cuz seeing your dead girlfriend'wife every day, haunting you, is pretty bad. When he mentions he wants to see her when he gets older, he means he cant wait to see her when he's also dead.

These could be wrong though, one is more metaphoric and the other is quite literal

But what if it actually IS her ghost, and she’s restless and upset, trying to get her lover’s attention, to let him know it’s her, but he doesn’t believe and she is instead forced to helplessly watch her lover spiral into insanity?
