There was one homebaker who basically called out all the ones complaining about Walmart by saying “if your business is threatened by that one cake then maybe you should expand your skills so you can offer something Walmart can’t.” I honestly can’t recall her name but some of the cakes she makes are so cool

The bakers who are genuinely upset and threatened by Walmart's cheap cakes are the ones who know their product quality is not high enough in comparison in order to still get customers. The ones who aren't bothered know their cakes are at a high enough standard to still get business despite there being cheaper options.

This whole drama is basically summarized into “how dare poor people enjoy anything they shouldn’t be allowed to”

Poor people are never allowed to have joy, we're ridiculed for having phones, for getting a cake, anything that's not a bare bones exists *because we are poor*. We're not supposed to treat ourselves to anything, we're supposed to suffer because we don't have money. That's always how they're going to view us, that's always how they're going to react when we have affordable options and when we splurge to get ourselves something we want.

The funny thing is that these home bakers will go to Walmart and buy the cake already frosted or unfrosted, and decorate them at home. They will also buy our containers. I have worked at Walmart for 15 years and a large portion of these home bakers in my area just resale Walmart cakes and charge 10 times more.

The biggest thing that gets me about this is that the angry home bakers aren't technically attacking Walmart. They're attacking other bakers that are just as talented as them but that happen to work for a big company instead of themselves or a small business. It feels like a superiority complex.

Honestly, the people who complained just show me who doesn't deserve my money 🤷🏻‍♀️

I was dead broke when my daughter turned 1, and I ate rice for a week to buy her a smash cake. From Walmart. For $7. Don’t denigrate people who can’t afford a bespoke cake, please.

I can understand wedding cakes and massive events... but the small birthday cakes... leave the customers alone.

The bakers complaining should take notes from the lash techs and hair stylist who had to go back to 9-5s because they kept insulting their customers and calling them broke lol

My kids can’t tell a difference between a $17 cake and a $170 cake. So I will keep buying the cheaper cakes and spend more on gifts that won’t be gone in a day

I used to work in walmart bakery we actually use everything small bakers use lmao literally saying we don't use real butter cream is crazy lmaoooo do they forget they come to OUR store to get their cake ingredients??? and are they aware we've been making custom vintage cakes? we just never advertised it
they only act like this when they see the heart cakes but wasn't acting like this before
if your business is crashing your shit must suck

A birthday cake is a luxury? Buddy, I’ve had Walmart cakes for my birthday for years and I’m not complaining on how much it costed. I’m glad my family would get me a cake to begin with! 😂 I think it’s the thought that counts too

craziest thing is that ppl who can only spend 25$ on a cake were NEVER going to buy your 100$ cake anyway! This isn't a lost sale, they were NEVER going to hire you because it's out of their budget! Projected sales are not ACTUAL sales, and as a small business owner myself I'm genuinely shocked at the entitlement some other small business owners show!

The strawberry from the store bought one is not rotten and made correctly. Also that “brown water” is the chocolate melting and condensation from her going to the store, picking up the cold strawberries, stepping out into the humid Florida weather, driving home in her air conditioned car, stepping out again into the Florida humid weather, and then once again going into her air conditioned home. Meanwhile the entire time her “chocolate” covered strawberries have been in her home the entire time.

Not to mention she uses a confectionary melt and not real chocolate but that’s a whole other issue while breaking down that it costs her $7 to make 18 berries and she charges $75 for it and said she took only 45 minutes for it. That’s $68 profit.

Imagine telling a child they aren’t allowed to have a birthday cake because it’s not fair to adults who run cake businesses. This world is very bizarre.

As someone who didn't grow up well off, I can really imagine being a kid and dreaming of getting the pretty cake for your birthday but knowing that it would never happen because your parents couldn't afford it. You're disappointed but resigned and understanding. Then your mum brings out the cake you'd been really really wanting (because there was an affordable version at walmart). Just imagine that feeling, feeling like you are good enough for nice things. How can someone genuinely be mad about that?

People were making birthday cakes during the great depression (you can find recipes video on youtube) because even they knew a birthday was a big day for their loved ones. So to hear it's a luxury today to have one is some bs.

This is sooo weird. In Germany there have always been nice cakes available at supermarkets, ranging from a 2, 99€ pound cake to a richly decorated 25€ cake that only needs to be defrosted. Has that every threatened or stopped bakeries and cafes? Not at all, not even in the slightest. But the professional cake by a bakery is a very special treat for very special occasions when the budget allows it. I didn’t get any of those when I was a child. Now I‘m able to treat myself to one every Sunday or just bake my own as I’ve acquired some skills at baking to.

Ordered a wedding cake from a small business and couldn't even cut into it because there was a disc in-between the two layer cake. It looked absolutely nothing like the photos I had given. Worst 200 dollars I've ever spent. Oh and they were late twice despite being 5 minutes away. I asked them when they'd deliver the cake, they gave me a time. I waited by the street in my wedding dress for 20 minutes. Nothing. I asked them again, they said it would be another 30 minutes. After the thirty minutes, I went outside again. 50 minutes later they finally showed up. Also, the cake was borderline inedible. None of the guests even wanted a second piece. Spent most of my wedding waiting on the street.
