The Common European Framework for Languages divides levels A1, A2, B1, B2, C1. So I imagine the new 9 stage HSK system is like having A1, A1+, A2, A2+, B1, B1+, B2, B2+, C1. I personally see pointless to take official examinations for levels below B1+. We should aim to be B1+ or close to B2 (by progressing all the way to C1 books) and then take an exam.
