Solidifying of liquid Gallium 10x speed

Density of solid Gallium smaller than density of the liquid, so it's expanding during solidification and break the bottle.

If you look really closely, some gallium shot out of the bottle when it cracked.

It is a seed to start crystalization, as gallium can stay liquid under its melting point (supercooling efect).

The interesting thing about gallium that I have discovered is that when properly mixed with other chemicals it makes a very powerful explosive.

@TheSovietBears Gallium is like water - it takes up more volume when it's solid. So when it cools it breaks through the glass.

I just recently bought some gallium and well I melted it down and am just wondering if you could tell me how long it will take to re harden? It has been liquid now for about 4 hours and only barely starting to harden.

so both gallium and water expand and lower their density during their solidification.. Does anyone know other chemical elements (or compounds) that do the same thing? thanks

As far as I know it's only silicon, bismuth and gallium

how hot must the gallium be in order to melt? i mean, can you touch it while it is liquid?

I suggest a "chemical hazard" wetsuit and respiratory mask, as mercury has its own safety issues. A simply bio hazard suit will not do the job (except, maybe, a level 4 biohazard suit)... Stay safe!
