Vadim Shishimarin, a 21-year-old Russian tank commander has pleaded guilty to killing an unarmed civilian, in the first war crimes trial in Ukraine since the conflict.
He admitted shooting a 62-year-old man in the northeast Ukrainian village of Chupakhivka on Feb. 28.
If convicted, he faces up to life imprisonment.
Prosecutors said Shishimarin and four other soldiers driving their stolen car encountered the 62-year-old on a bicycle, and talking on his phone.
Then Shishimarin was ordered to kill the man to prevent him reporting on the Russians' presence.
The victim died on the spot after being shot at head.
Russia has denied targeting civilians or involvement in war crimes and accused Kyiv of staging them to smear its forces.
But investigators have been collecting evidence of possible war crimes to bring before the Int’l Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague.
The ICC is sending a team of 42 investigators, forensics experts and support staff to Ukraine.
