Tombow 2558 HB Pencil Review

Показать описание
A look at the Tombow 2558 in HB grade. This pencil is made in Vietnam, and features a yellow hexagonal barrel with a bronze-toned ferrule and pink eraser. I have reviewed the Tombow 2558 in B grade on this channel previous, and I was curious how the HB compared. I compare the two pencil as I take a closer look at this fine pencil. #pencils #pencilreviews #analog #asmr #handwriting

I came here from your wonderful Cavalcade of Food channel and am amazed how many elements one can assess regarding the lowly lead pencil. Clearly I’ve taken them for granted since my writing days began in the 1960s. This is so interesting! Thank you for these insightful videos. I am going to look at the pencils in my junk drawer to see what treasure may be found! 🙂

The ferrule finish is, I believe, typically called "gun metal".

Thanks for doing the hand sharpen on this one. Impressive pencil. I like the ferrule color. I’m appreciating more the eraser portion of the review. There are many subtle nuances that you notice and describe for us. Well done.

That’s a great sounding pencil! Strong lines and seems smooth as you say. I thought I had one of these but I do not. Added to list!

Thanks for another Tombow pencil review. For those who are interested: even the Tombow MONO and MONO 100 pencils are now made in Vietnam, but they are of a high quality. Only the Mitsu-bishi Hi-uni pencils are still made in Japan. The MONO 2B pencil writes very well, and is the best pencils I have ever used. I have yet to try a Hi-uni pencil, and see if it writes better than the MONO. Also, the MONO HB is smoother than the Mitsu-bishi 9800 HB.

Tombow probably shares a spot with Kitaboshi atop my Most Perfect Currently-Manufactured Pencils list. Thanks for a close look at this outstanding writer.

Hi, Kevin! I love that 'B' pencil. Both look dark, but the 'HB' seemed scratchier to me. Now, I enjoy the feedback I get from any pencil on paper, but those smooth writing Japanese pencils are just wonderful. Thanks for the video, Kevin. I'll probably order the 'B' pencil from Amazon. Have a lovely day, Kevin!

The Japanese pencil manufacturers are all A plus across the board. Hard to pick a favorite though Tombow is up there for sure..thank you so much for another review!

I like this tombow pencil, but my favorite high quality, good value pencil is the Mitsubishi 9850 office pencil because it has an excellent eraser on the end of the pencil. The beautiful maroon color is so glossy and smooth. Kitaboshi 9606 is also a good office pencil with a decent eraser on it.

I love Japanese wooden pencils with the Hi-Unis and Mono 100s at the top of my list, but I hoarde these pencils. I'll freely give away 9850s, .9606, or 2558 because they're still awesome compared to most wooden pencils.

I find the B grades of Japanese pencils to be in the Goldilocks zone of darkness and hardness. If I could find a japanese pencil for sale, my default choice would be B. Although, I cannot immediately distinguish a B from an HB too.😅. Thanks for the video, I really enjoyed it

Im rather new to taking more of an interest in pencils. I dont really have a great sharpener and i just got a pack of these tombows and mitsubishi 9850s hb. I have one of the cheaper staedtler sharpeners that usuallt comes in a bundle and it doesnt sharpen these japanese pencils all the way. But yesterday i tried something, i sharpened it somewhat okay in the sharpener but i took sandpaper for pencils and finished sharpening the tip with that. So i was wondering your thoughts on that. Does it damage the pencil or core? Is it a good thing since it seems to preserve more of the pencil that would be lost in a traditional sharpener while being able to keep the tip sharp? Is a perfectly even tip from a traditional sharpener much more superior in feel and performance for these quality pencils?

I’m not sure what are the Tombow Mono pencils are made of sure is graphite but I notice and compare with other high end pencils with exceptions with the 6b-12 steadtler… just with the Tombow HB little to not pressure is already dark enough equivalent to 3b or quasi-4B

In darkness, I have personally noticed little to no difference between Japanese B and HB graphite. Their HB is _dark._ You can only tell visually between them because the B's trace looks more "full", more consistent and less spotty, like the paper's tooth bites better onto the lead. The real difference in my experience is on the tactile feedback: B glides more smoothly, brush-like, as I always say, though with a clear tradeoff in point retention.
[I could go on and on about why that brush-like aspect is important to Japanese calligraphy but I doubt anyone here cares enough, so I'll spare you the essay.]

That is excellent erasability, going by the camera footage. I'd give it no less than an A-.

Fun fact: Tombow (tonbō) means "dragonfly" or "odonata", a popular insect in Japanese culture both old and new. Hence the dragonfly logo.

I have about 12 Ruwe degree 2 unbranded pencils left from my late grandfather's half gross box. I had more but some crumbled from any attempt at sharpening

They look very similar to the Mitsu-bishi 9852.
