A Brief History Behind AoE2 Civ Emblems!

I love the AoE2 civilisation emblems, and decided to do a bit of a look into the symbolism/history behind each of them.

Please do not take this information as gospel! I did my best to research this topic; some of the emblems have very little information on them and more often than not, Wikipedia had the most information on these symbols.

Videos like these are passion projects for me, and take hours to research, plan and create. If you enjoy it, please leave a like, and consider sharing the video!

Sources (yes, I used a lot of Wikipedia 11):

Regarding the Italian emblem, it is also very similar to the flag/coat of arms of Genoa. The Italian civ seems the be modeled heavily after the Republic of Genoa, since they have genoese crossbowmen and bonuses to trade and ships.

The reason for Bohemians having black in the bottom half is that red and black together are symbolic of revolution, and the Bohemian civ is based on the Hussite wars.

I love this video! I myself spend a lot of time with civ emblem designs and this shows how much research went into the game!

becasue you ddi not find much about the malians, i figured i give my 2 cents:
1st I agree with what you said that it is at least partially based on a shield with troubled patterns. But i think multiple things were incorporateed here.
3) The stripes at the top and circles on the side could be a note to decorations commonly found on clothing by the mandika people today, a people which lived in the mali empire. However this combination (if intended or not) makes the shield look somewhat like a Maasai shield to me.

That was a great explanation of what do these emblems mean.

Nice research on the references, I especially liked that you quoted very specific years to reflect the period that the civilisations were based off on

I was looking for this video to be made! Thanks <3
May I suggest lowering the volume of the music so it doesn't compete with your voice, please

Thank you very much for the video, my suggestion for making it even better - next time lower the volume of music a bit a speak a little slower, or more attention to articulation as sometimes I had troubles recognizing words. Ty ✌️

all the crosses on the ethiopian shield is surely a reference to how the empire/kingdom of Ethiopia (Aksum) was a uniquely christian nation in a part of the world that is otherwise almost entirely muslim and it being potentially the first nation to adopt christianity as a state religion. It was also therefore early users of cross symbols like on their currency
