As a guy who couldn’t improvise, I finally one day decided to learn the pentatonic scales in all positions. Within a couple weeks I was playing all over the neck against backing tracks. Then I decided to learn my caged shapes which contain all the arpeggios and triads. My playing immediately leveled up again. The stuff you’re talking about right here is the secret sauce. It’s all about the chords. Everything sits on top of them.

I know all my triad shapes and if I have a second I can tell you the notes I'm playing. This exercise will make my note calling instant,

Excellent. The last thing a master learns is simplicity. This simple but also so adaptable. Brilliant work. More like this, please. Thanks

Great advice throughout. You actually aced it when you mentioned that the triad is 135.This means that you can transfer this knowledge to every key just by identifying the fret position for the root (1) of each triad. You will need to adapt for the open string one, of course, but triads are the best way to find your way round the fretboard. Once you get that the root is moveable, you have the 3 major chords of any key, which means you can play a huge number of songs pretty much by ear. Next, the minor triads, and you have everything!

Excellent video. I love the triad training. Opens up so many doors. Sort of like learning the CAGED system but seems more useful and player friendly to me.

Good start! Now learn the inversions on each set of strings and you’ll go a lot further. First root lowest, next third lowest, then fifth lowest.

Hey Jellyfish ! I just started memorising the notes 2 days ago by just looking at the fret, playing it and trying to remember the note one string per day. It is working but is not sounding very musical as my wife clearly communicated to me lol. I'll give your method a try later today. So thanks !

Liked the video, and maybe this has been suggested but I would learn all those shapes and then move through all 12 keys with it. Naming the notes as you go, first one fret at a time(half step) C triads then C#\Db then D and so on.

Then repeat by whole steps- c triads then d then e.

Then repeat by minor thirds - c then D#\Eb then F#\Gb

Then by major thirds - c the e then G# etc. etc.

Will help not only learn the entire fretboard in context but also help with interval recognition.

Also, Jellyfish

Jellyfish.

I really liked this video. I’ve tried to memorize all the notes. Just can’t do it. But seems like you have your know the notes to make this work.

I have lots of questions. But I’ll limit it to three.

1. If you don’t know the notes on the fretboard how do you find the different triad shapes?

2. How does this work for other open chords?

3. How does this work for barre chords.

Jellyfish, great video. to learn the fretboard are you suggesting we try each note with the 4 triad. so for example for G use G B C. in the 4 different position
