You fill them full of a flammable material, light it and launch using sling shots... The "nobbles" are to help get a grip on what ever they fall on.. Launch at a rooftop or haystack.
Different "Types" by different blacksmiths, simply a makers mark/design.
Just an idea but it fits in my mind as there use.

I was thinking that possibly the Roman Dodecahedrons ciuld have been used to make fishing nets. The different size holes are for different net laceing sizes. I used something similar when I was a kid to make things using yarn

So there are a total of 24 "discovered" caves. 19 are still flooded and only 5 have been drained out. There are Many carvings on the walls. But sadly, no inscriptions. Yet...
