This week’s Culturally Curious Hop saw The Wick in conversation with visionary New York-based artist Mickalene Thomas, whose new exhibition, All About Love, is currently on display at Hayward Gallery.

Curated by Rachel Thomas, Chief Curator at Hayward Gallery, the exhibition delves into over two decades of Thomas’ groundbreaking portraiture that highlights the strength, resilience, and beauty of African-American women and icons.

A groundbreaking force in contemporary art, Thomas is widely celebrated for her innovative approach and instantly recognisable aesthetic. Through her vibrant collages, she weaves together themes of femininity, race, beauty, and personal history, often spotlighting African-American women and celebrities in ways that challenge conventional narratives and celebrate their power and presence.

All About Love is a celebration of empowerment. The title itself draws from the work of author and activist bell hooks, who profoundly explored love as a force of healing and transformation. In this exhibition, Thomas amplifies these ideals, offering a visual tribute to love in all its forms.
