Only ever had to deal with that once in Maine, and I've probably fished close to 150 lakes. We ended up fishing a lake that was previously public, but the access point got sold to the local HOA due to vandalism. We drive by the launch, see the "No Trespassing" signs and then move on. About a week later, my dad calls a friend who has a cottage on this pond, because he knew how badly we wanted to fish it. The second we get there with our canoe, a lady from the HOA starts screaming at us, telling us that "her property line goes all the way to the road" and that "you can't bring outside boats here". We ignore her because we literally had permission and ALWAYS check our canoe for plants, and she ends up leaving us alone.

Maine is very good with public access thankfully, and with the few ponds that are truly private, all you usually have to do is knock on a door or know somebody. I wish more states weren't so stuck up about fishermen trespassing, but I get the appeal of a private lake. And there's a difference between SNEAKING on and getting yelled at, versus actually having permission and STILL getting yelled at...
