Don’t Buy The Samsung S90D QD OLED - It’s Amazing
All last year and still to this day I’ve been recommending everyone and their grandma buy a Samsung S90C if their in the market for a 55-77” Display, because not only does it have the superior color volume and per pixel dimming of QD OLED, but it was much brighter than traditional WOLED displays at often time the same or a lower price, making it a no brainer, and this year Samsung has delivered yet again with their S90D, but I actually don’t think you should buy it, at least not yet, and here's why.

Now I do plan on making a full in depth review at some point, but my impressions from everything I’ve seen is that the Samsung S90D is a slightly brighter, and potentially slightly less buggy version of the S90C, but coming in at a much higher price.

Therein lies the problem.

This year LG has really stepped it up with their LG G4, which while it does come in at a higher price, initial comparisons do seem to be favoring it (affiliate links to all these TVs in the description below if you want to buy any of them btw (daddy’s gotta eat)) anyway, yes it seems the G4 is looking very favorable this year meaning that Samsung may not have the best TV in 2024 since the higher end S95D seems to have had it’s image quality significantly degraded with a matte coating, and the S90D has had it’s brightness nerfed far lower than their highest end model.

In fact early number I saw being reported appeared to be showing the S90D coming it at maybe around just 10% brighter than the S90C YUCK which could achieve over 1100nits, whereas the S95D has moved to what appears to be in excess of 1600nits, but again just won’t look as crisp thanks to the worse coating.

Now LG has also lost their minds and is definitely still pricing their C series WAY too high as well, but likewise the S90D just doesn’t make sense to buy at its current price of nearly $2,000 for the 55” when it seems to be just barely better than the S90C which after discounts can often be had for just over $1,100 new or around that without discounts refurbished on Amazon.

So right now I just simply cannot recommend the S90D, but I do suggest keeping your third eye on it as it’s likely that we’ll see another panel lottery where many launch models will using a last generation S95C panel, but as the year goes on and S95C production ceases, eventually most S90D panels should change to S95D panels, which and while I officially don’t recommend this, means that in theory you could likely change almost all of them into an S95D in that secret menu and get a massive brightness boost.

That plus the fact that often Samsung TVs can be had for around 40% off near black Friday after discounts and sales, means buying one right now is likely a bad idea since if you wait till the end of the year not only would you likely get a much better price and potentially better, less buggy firmware, but also you could even get a better panel.

I think this reviewer is full of it. I bought an S90D 65in for 1599 today. The TV is freaking awesome. Its my first time having and OLED for gaming. It looks the way I always dreamed games should look. And also my is not WOLED, all 55s and 65s in US are the same.

Just go and buy the s90c if you want a new high end tv. Its brightness and hdr will blow your eyeballs away. You don't need the D model trust me.

As someone who sells these tvs for a living, I can tell anyone that is completely up to personal preference. Most of my customers prefer the 90d because of Panton validated colors making them look more realistic, on the other hand people like that more neonish colors of the LG oled. Again, personal preference. I have both, and for me, as someone who uses my oleds for gaming and content consumption, I prefer the s90d. All are great options though.

As someone who just upgraded to a G4 from a G2 I can testify that LG has absolutely knocked it out of the park this year

Agree. And this is coming from a 55 S90D owner (got on paid review). The only real “updates” are a bit brighter out-of-the-box & better UI. Still same exact Gen 2 panel at 55 & 65in. 77 S90D *may* get Gen 3, time’ll tell.. If so, that’s the TV of the year imo, hands down.

You can easily buy a S89C/S90C & get the same Gen 2 panel as the current S90D.

Here’s the kicker: If you go into the service menu, you can tweak some settings to really max out brightness. So much so that the S89C, S90C & S90D are practically identical. Personally getting 2k nits peak brightness & around 1300 on 10%.

I just got a 65" S90D QD OLED for $1389. Definitely well worth it and it's plenty bright

The S90D is $1699 right now. For the 65” — this entire video is trash. The 65” G4 is $3299.

Any update on gaming with the S90D using a Nividia Graphics Card? Rtings noted it had issues above 120fps "duplicates parts at the bottom of the screen".

Samsung S90D “77 great picture in fact fantastic picture HOWEVRR, mine died in 54 days, they are replacing it but I know 3 other people that have been thru multiple in under 90 days. My buddy has had 3 replacements in under 90 days all “77 s90d (he owns a bar). First one was DOA the other 2 shut off on its own and were dead. Mine, shut off while watching a movies and that was that, dead. They really need to fix the issue before having people buy a top line television and having it die in under 90 days. Ridiculous.
Update they swapped it and I’ve had no issues great set. Maybe it was that batch 🤷‍♂️, my buddy same he got all 3 replaced and when replaced he has had no issues and they are on everyday for 16 hour +.

I'm currently trying to decide between the LG G3, Samsung S90C and S90D. Any opinions?
Will be mainly used for streamed video via Netflix/Disney/Youtube/Kodi.

I updated my firmware on my s90d and lost 300 nits of peak brightness. Samsung up to its usual tricks. Wait for the initial reviews to come out then nerf. The windows hdr calibration app initially showed 1150 of peak brightness and 1 week later it is down to 850 nits

S95D here, had a deal on a 77 inch for $2850, the coating is absolutely no issue, the tv is incredible, and while gaming, I never think about coating whatsoever. In fact, although at first I was hesitant, i have become more impressed with it the more that I use it and see absolutely zero glare at all even with my lamps on in the background

Hello, I'm about to buy my first TV, choosing between TCL c755 and Samsung s90d qd-oled. The last one is on discount and the difference between the 2 is just 150$ now. I'll use it in a bright room, but I'm thinking about oled especially for media consumption at night. My question is : how better s90d compared to c755 ? Does it worth it to pay 200$ more (including 50$ for android tv box) ? Will content be as good in android tv box with HDMI, or is it better when played in native android TV ? Thanks a lot

Only a single size is QD-OLED where I live, everything else is WOLED without MLA. Also no sizes outside of 55, 65 & 77 are qd-oled anywhere!!

Best Hamburger in the world is worth nothing if someone puts nutella into it. Same with TVs, sharp and clear reflections destroy every glossy coated TV picture. Some people don't even realize that their picture turns into BS if sun is out or someone turns on a lamp. They even brag about their new super-TV and I am just stunned cause they don't even care about the huge reflections. I am gonna buy the S95D, picture quality is more than good, low to no reflections and it is brighter than any other OLED with its 1700nits. LG doesnt seem to care much about anti-reflection, mirrors no thx! If I want to shave my face I go to the bathroom...
